Same old story. She and 20 other folks were in an AI and were warned that they would be jumped the moment the were outside of the grounds and un-escorted. She saw guys up on roofs at gas stations with shotguns and she was kept secluded from anything like the real DR. You've got an area with thousands of hotel rooms at over $200/night and no real local economy. This is what they want for Sosua and the rest of the North Coast? Had a good time though with the booze and the two-day old Mama Juana..

Those guys you see with shotguns are there to make it safe, if you can see them, they can see you. Your pretty safe un pc, if she wanted DR why did she go to PC. I go there occasionally and pretend i'm M?xico por brazil .

It had something to do with school. She's a hotel management major and I think the trip was to see how the big operations work. I was telling her to take a day trip up to Cabrera(maybe horseback riding), Playa Grande, Las Terranas or inland. IMHO, the bigger they come, the harder they fall. I don't think I'd stay in PC even with free hotels. I hate big hotels, esp AIs. 50 rooms is about my max.

The North Coast has gone the "condo" route, not the AI route.

I agree that AI's suck. Like a cruise ship that does not move.

The all. Inclusives have given the opportunity for hundreds to test the DR. And If. They didnt get brainwashed fear factor, they. Would discover that its assets . however this is usually the coast , where the DOMINICAN. OWNED all inclusives refused to spend money Often, and the. North coast is perishing , and has now only really hd condo. Rentals and ownership. WITHOUT a good number of A.I ,for seeding new arrivals the north coast is heading for the jungle , stepping Barack in time .

I would never recommend an AI in the DR. I couldn't imagine recommending one anywhere. An AI is an awesome way of spending a fortune and flying to an exotic destination, and actually never seeing much of anything at that exotic destination. Last time I was in PC, I felt completely safe, and had a great experience. And I stayed at a locally owned small hotel.

While it is true staying at a AI will never really show you the "real" Dominican, the AI's do attract those who want a relaxing, not have to think about much, etc...type of vacation. I have many friends that come to Punta Cana and enjoy staying at the AI. For them it is a win-win. Price includes everything pretty much, and they can sit back and relax. No stress about where to go and eat, where to go buy drinks. It is all right there. I have personally never heard any of them say that they have been told that they would not be safe off the resort. In fact many wander into town to shop including my family who comes twice a year. That is not to say it does not happen though, I am sure that many of tourists have been told this. It all comes down to what type of vacation someone is looking for.

A/I are the only escape many dominicans have from this country. Ex pats alike, it is not always viable toleave at every given chance, but hell, break es very welcome.

It seems to me the Turks and Caicos may be better an as AI site. There are so few people that the population of the AIs can be more than the locals, so much so that they actually need workers to come up from the DR. They have to produce their own water and electric, but at least then it's potable, unlike Dominican tap water. They speak English(better than Jamaicans) and the ocean is in better shape because there isn't as much fishing and run off from agriculture and cities. As a British territory, imports aren't taxed in the same way. But the DR is greener and the Turks are MUCH hotter..

Peter, i must take you to task on this. when you say that the people from the Turks speak better english than Jamaicans, which Jamaicans are you referring to?

It is not the A-Is but many Americans, especially those who have not travelled outside the US, that fuels the fire of the DR being unsafe. They perceive of a culture driven by crime and feel secure inside the confines of the resort. If you do not speak the language and are not familiar with the customs than you will not be comfortable in the real DR. Many want the sun and fun but not tthe perceived hassle. Can you really blame them?

Peter, the "Belongers" in the T&Cs, quite unlike Bahamians, have a huge attitude problem. They hire Dominicans for many things beside construction. Dominicans present a much better face to the tourists.

Fikshing, by the way, is restricted to hand, hook and line.

In theory one would expect more depth from a hotel management student, along with life and travel experience.
Hotel management should be knowledgeable about the country and world outside of the resort, and also have language skills other than english. I would expect spanish, german and french if working in a 5* resort in the DR.
She should have heeded your advice!
Sosua has fewer tourists, quite a few casetas on the beach are closed. For me Siempre Sol and Tom's Scandinavian bar are good to hang out and Tom's the only place to eat on the beach. In some ways it's a luxury to have less people.
The closed windows on the bars are a turn off, but enough chicks for those who are searching.
The North Coast has community and landscape and will survive and hopefully evolve.
As for tourism, infrastructure, roads and sidewalks major improvements are needed and will be lacking for a long time in my opinion.
Rental costs are too high for what is offered and for what one encounters when leaving the condo or house.

Wrong, each of you on both counts. I've spent many years working and visiting the Turks and Caicos and find the peeps to be very warm and welcoming. The rub lies in when a visitor comes to the country with the typical first world attitude. At that point, they'll lock up on you like a catfish on a noodler.

Pelaut, PM me, and I'll send you my pic of a 60+ lb yellowfin I caught off Grand Turk. Try hauling in that pig on a handline.
