Correction, only 20 lbs larger than the largest grouper previously caught. More plausible?

I dunno about biggest ever caught, but I've been in the water with grouper that big, and bigger. They're belligerent jerk-off fish that take up territorial space right where we tend to hate them the most. The cool thing about them is they can't handle quick pressure change, meaning once you get them off bottom a bit, they're embolized and don't put up much of a fight. Getting that thing off bottom though...not as easy as it sounds.

not sure if abuela linked the same article, i cannot open it in chrome for some reason.
puerto plata digital had this article yesterday: Presunto
they claim, of course that the fish was a man eater and it strikes fear in the hearts of the locals.

Saw one up close and personal about 10 years ago in the keys. Of course they were called jewfish but now we use the more politically correct term giant grouper. Anyway i was diving on the eagle, an old tire hauling ship sitting at a depth of about 110 feet. I have no idea how much it weighed but it looked the size of a golf cart. It seemed pretty docile to me.

Looks like some simple photo trickery. Someone hanging the fish in front of the camera. No ropes or rigging to lift up the fish? Just one photo?

It's only 264 lbs more than the previous largest grouper ever caught.

It is being assumed that this particular Jewfish (Goliath Grouper) is 700lbs. The article only states that this species can reach weights of up to 300 kilos (700) lbs.

You are correct! And it isn't likely anyone will have a scale in GH capable of weighing it.

Could have been photoshopped, but could have been real as well. These fish grow big.

And while I've seen them get aggressive with divers on occasion, they're not what you'd call predatory by any means. They're like a territorial cow more than anything. Dangerous because of their size, not due to any significant teeth or bite they might possess.
