Saturday April 5 at 2 pmThe Meeting Place film club concludes its high-season offerings with the 2012 Oscar nominated film ?No?. Over the last three months we have been treated to a number of interesting films ? films that often are neglected by theatres showing the Hollywood block busters. Some have been emotionally wrenching but rewarding (i.e. the recent ?The Officers? Ward), some have even let us peek into Taino cultures meeting European (i.e. Even the Rain), some such as The Past have carried us into the lives of others. All have raised interesting questions. This week we have a fast-paced, comic-at-times, film based on real events.
In the fascinating film ?No? we are brought back to 1988 when Chilean military dictator Augusto Pinochet, due to international pressure, is forced to call a plebiscite on his presidency. The country will vote YES or NO to Pinochet extending his rule for another eight years. The opposition saw little hope ? until a brash young advertising executive, Rene Saavedra (the handsome and charismatic Gael Garcia Bernal), devised an audacious plan to win the vote and set Chile free. Can the same tactic used to sell Cola also sell political choice?
In Spanish with subtitles in English (a good way to practice your Spanish and/or invite your Spanish-speaking friends). This is an entertaining and rewarding film.
