Newbie to DR, just came back from my 20 day short trip from DR, loved it and love to come back to stay even longer. I?m a Canadian lives in Toronto, background Sri Lanka.
Most part of my visit I stayed at R?o San Juan and visited many neighboring provinces.
I?m interested in coming back to DR with my family in first week in July, 2014. I?m trying to get much information as possible to make our next trip a worthwhile. before i registered with dr1, I have gone through the forum and decided to join.
I?m planning on coming to DR just with air ticket only, instead of booking as a package deal which we never interested in (drinking in the pool and eating at the buffet).
I?m looking for suggestion for places near Cabarete, Sosua or Puerto Plata. I came accross suncampdr.com haven?t initiated any contact.

Welcome aboard....what is it you would like to explore and see in the area....are you bringing children and what ages. Let me know I know of someone who has a rental in Cabarette as well as Sosua. From either place you can travel to Puerto Plata etc....what is it you would like to experience.

I live at Suncamp full time... all year long... for the past 2.5 years in DR, 14 months at Suncamp, 10 months in Puerto Plata and going crazy so I came back to Suncamp.

Not luxury appartment but basics.... Electricity, hot water in the shower, Internet.... what do you need more when you live in a country where the temperature is always above 20C at night and 26C during the day ???

I found my paradise and still don't miss Qu?bec.... but let others will say, the DR is not for everyone... you have to be able to adapt yourself to a different way of life and be open minded....

If you want more info on Suncamp, let me know. But truly, not realy the perfect place if you have kids....

Rent a nice place in Cabarete or Sosua. Suncamp is in the middle of nowhere and also very near an extremely poor haiten village, not my idea of a safe or enjoyable place to stay.

Mr. Wayne, have you visited Suncamp ?? Electric gate, guard dogs (3), all doors and with bars and screens.... Lights at every corner of each building.... nothing never happened at Suncamp compared to other safe "gated communities"....

And like Sosua or Cabarete, you take a taxi publico for 30 pesos and 10 minutes later you are in the middle of Puerto Plata... The best of both worlds..... The city is very close and you live in the campo, quiet, lots of trees, birds, a nice clear river and MOST IMPORTANT, a big great sens of belonging, as eveybody looks out for the others....

I came here alone, woman, 4'10", 85 lbs... and I felt very safe.... Still do....

Before trashing others places, come and visit and then, after, you can bitch all you want but don't forget, a certain lifestyle could be perfect for one and hawfull for the others.... I could'nt live in a kind of resort complex with concrete, 3 palms trees and beings stuck on my balcony..... What the fun of living on a tropical island if you live like you were in your home country during the month of July....

Lise, I'm glad you have found your paradise but you can't argue what Munoz is surrounded by. I have a woodworker I use that has a shop in Munoz so I am there often. I just wouldn't recommend the area to anyone. There are much better places for a newbie to the DR to stay. A seasoned veteran might be ok with the place but I'm sure that would be a very small percentage.

Welcome and enjoy your next visit.

I have a family and we rent a villa at Residencial Casa Linda. Safe, gated, 24hr security. Onsite amenities. I am partial to Casa Linda, but there are other type of places like this.

As far as attractions, you have to do Monkey Jungle. I'm assuming you have children, but even if you don't have kids it's fun for adults. The monkey tour and zipling are great. Can't beat the scenery either.

We go horeseback riding as well in Puerto Plata. Rancho Lorillar. Be warned, these are not old nags that plod along. Some parts of the tour are full gallup. Thought I was in a John Wayne western!

I did Oceanworld Casino once for dinner, but not the dolphin show. Nice

Do a glassbottom boat tour at Sosua beach.

The name escapes me now, but there is a "Christ the Redeemer" like statue in Puerto Plata. You take a cable car up the mountain to reach it. You can drive as well, but half the fun is the cable car up the mountain.

Better stop now, I can hear the snarky replies being typed up now.

I've been coming here for 10 years now and I've grown to love the country. Get out there and have fun.

Then I must be a VERY SPECIAL person because I came to Suncamp first, because of the security and the fact that I knew I could count on many part time r?sidents to guide me in the adaptation of a new country, new language and new way of life. And don't forget, it's not everybody that has $ 5,000US to live on.......Where the fun of changing your life if the only thing that is different from your previous life is only the scenery and the language of your Neighbors....

OH NO, YOU don't even get that because you live in a Gated community where the only language spoken is English.... Because only expats can afford those montlhy rents..... Gimme a break !!!

I agree Charlise, we did not want to be the gringos who moved here to be in a gated community. I have learned SO much from the barrio we live and would not change that for anything!

I don't know if I will feel as safe when we move to a gated community! That is actually one reason I don't want to move I feel safe here, the locals really watch out for us! They are psycho about reporting any strange faces to police and the police come FAST
if needed!

I do get annoyed about being asked for things from the barrio peeps here but they don't do that as much as when we moved in.

Hello,

I too am a newbie on this website. I have visited the DR multiple times and have stayed in several different hotels. I must travel to the DR soon on business and need to stay for several weeks, perhaps as long as one month. I visited the SunCamp.com site (too rough for me, though). Besides, the m'skeeters would eat me alive up there, I'm sure!

Can you, or any other seasoned member of this forum, recommend a decent extended-stay apartment or hotel within the 300- 350 USD per month price range for the north shore area (POP, Sosua, Caberete, etc.)?

Thanx
