Hello.
I found this site by chance. I think here are lots of useful information about DR. Great!
I'm living in Santo domingo. I've been here for about 2 months.
I came to DR with my husband, because of his work.
Since I have no job here, I don't once step out of the house all day.
These days, I'm studying Spanish by myself. But beyond that, I have nothing to do.
It's getting board. I'd like to make some friends.
But I can hardly speak Spanish, and even English is not my mother tongue.
However, It's not about that. I think I will be able to overcome the language barriers.
The problem is that I don't know what can I do here, and where I can make some friends.
I think it would be good to learn something, such as cooking, painting, or dancing..
But still I don't know where I can have the lessons.
Hope you give any advice for me.
Gracias.

Welcome lemontree. I may not be able to help you much but I'll ask you some questions that others would ask as well so that they can better assist you:

-how old are you (you can give a range if you prefer)
-where in the capital do you live?
-how long do you both intend to stay for?
-do you have children with you? ages?
-where are you guys from?
-have you visited the DR before? often?
-do you have any special skills?/work background?...

- no children
- from south Korea

- not really. I used to be a project planner of mobile applications for kids in my country. But It's useless here.

Heya welcome!
Great you've found this site with much information, i'm happy with it too.
And good to know theres more ladies that come on the island because of the husbands job. I hope you enjoy :)
And for the spanish, i think it's not easy. Im studying by listening to CoffeeBreak Spanish lessons. So good luck to you an me both.
I think best is not to stay at home too much, go out to drink a coffee and enjoy.
Than i think on this forum there must be someone who can give advice to where you could go for cooking lessons or dancing.
Good luck and have fun.

There, MUST be a "Korean Church" somewhere here in SD.
Anyone know about that!
Or maybe "Mauricio" can invite you to his church some Sunday????

Awhile back, Koreano and his lovely wife made me a large container full of homemade Kimchee............
The best I ever ate............
But, for about 3 days.................
had to stay very close to my bathroom...........
It was worth every roll of toilet paper...........

WISH I HAD MORE...............SOOOOOOO YUMMY......:lick:
Lemontree, do you make Kimchee..............
Oh, by the way......welcome to dr1.............

I met some Koreans (South) in China town aka the oriental zone in Santo Domingo...Never saw the Chinese and Koreans get along so well, maybe they can teach each other some diplomatic skills back east.

Also wanted to mention that there is a poster here on DR1 named Koreano.

I don't know him personally, and don't know if he's in the capitol, and now that I think of it I'm not sure he's actually Korean. Maybe someone that knows him will chime in? You might want to send him a pm as he may not see this thread.

Anyway, I recall that he's married and his wife stays at home with their child, so perhaps she might be someone that you'd have something in common with? I don't think they've been in country for a long time, either.

Welcome to DR1!

Thank you all. Now I knew, in DR, there are a lot of kind people, not only the useful information.
My husband is not a Korean, and doesn't work with any Koreans.
maybe that's why I couldn't make even Korean friends yet.
But I like to hang out with international friends. so I think it doesn't need to be Koreans.
Anyway, I appreciate all of you.
I'm thinking to take a Spanish class.
It would be helpful in learning spanish and my social activities.

Finding Home

Welcome to the dr1 forums, Ms. Lemontree. If you are missing home, there are one block you must visit. The first is on Calle Benito Gonzalez, on the Ozama River side of Duarte, and about three blocks above Avenida La Mella. This is the center of the Asian community. Best to look at it first on Google Maps.
