From today's Sosua News:

According to a report in El Faro (Puerto Plata), preparations are being made for the construction of a 'Zona Franca' in Sos?a. The initiative seems to come from Ian Schembri Sant, CEO of The Ocean Club Group. In the Dominican Republic about 500 companies do business in the approximately fifty 'Zonas Francas', so tax-free zones. Companies in these areas have an exemption from various taxes for a period of fifteen years. These areas are particularly designed for export production. Over 50% of the companies work in the clothing and shoes manufacturing for the U.S. market. Almost half of the companies is of American origin. But in Sos?a they are especially interested in companies in the IT business, energy savings business and security equipment companies. The new Zona Franca should not create competition for the existing Zona Francas in Puerto Plata and Santiago. According to the article in El Faro, Sos?a disposes of unique opportunities. Indeed, there are many university graduates in the region because there are three universities in Puerto Plata. The graduates are bilingual because they speak Spanish and English. The infrastructure is favorable and the airport is only 15 minutes away and easily accessible.

For the better educated people, Sos?a with its beautiful beach, water sports, international restaurants, cultural center and rich Jewish tradition, is a nice place to live. The new Zona Franca will provide a job for at least 100 high educated professionals. In addition, another 200 jobs for young professionals. In addition, many people will find jobs in security, transportation and maintenance. Furthermore, all kinds of companies like hair salons, colmados, supermarkets, bars, restaurants, fashion shops and real estate companies will benefit from the increased purchasing power of workers from the new Zona Franca.

" IT " business is Sosua .That's hysterical

Really? There are people on the north coast that know IT. Besides, it's just a "zone" for startups. If a company or group want to give it a shot, why not? What's your alternative - not try anything?

Sosua IS a Megamall of brothels.
Some guy with a computer and some software is hardly a "startup"
Somehow I think Sillican Valley and San Jose are not going to make Sosua their sister city any time soon.
Hey I have an idea, why not try and make Sosua a mini Wall Street, with brokers and traders filling the streets and taking advantage of the light fast fiber-optic Internet cable.

good for sosua. but can they please stop with this "culture" bullcrap? there is no culture in sosua.

Actually, Sosua is improving in this respect, also. There is now an art center that displays area artists as well as exhibits loaned by the world-class center in Santiago; there is a theater group that puts on excellent productions; children are being given art, dancing and music lessons in the art center; musical groups are performing on PC at night; the Emily Watson dance school puts on shows; etc.

No, Sosua is far from being the cultural center of the universe, but over the past several years definite improvement has been made, much of involving children, which is good for the future of Sosua.

There is a tablet being manufactured presently in Haiti, so if they can do it we can too. Doesn't IT generally mean software though? So maybe i am off base.

I agree, why not...computer stuff can be built/assembled in DR just as good as anywhere else with the right know how and training.
And IT (information technology) covers a wide spectrum...software, hardware, communications, security.
I'll be in Sosua in a few months, spending the winter (hate Canadian winters). Been in the IT field for 15 years, specifically
IT security the last 8-10 years. So if anyone needs any IT help/assistance, let me know.

It's really sort of sad that Sosua keeps referencing its "rich Jewish tradition." What Sosua has is an interesting Jewish history, unique in the world. But a community? A tradition? Not by a long shot. I realize this has nothing to do with the Zona Franca. But who knows? Lots of IT companies are Israeli, so maybe that will help to boost our numbers here and create a community.

Where? I couldn't find anything open the other day.

You're partially right - it's a guy with a computer, some software and an IDEA. An Idea that he can do something more efficiently then everybody else....or maybe he has only figured out a way to market it better? If that guy ends up employing only 2 or 3 people, is that not a success for Sosua?

People in the tech industry tend to migrate towards each other to exchange ideas and brainstorm. That is why I indicated Sillicon Valley, San Jose, Austin TX and other tech corridors. When some tech savy kid graduates from M.I.T he is not thinking Sosua.
"Realistically" Sosua will not become a high tech location and to market it as such seems to be a waste of political energy however it is entertaining.
As far as you being unable to find an open brothel ie: bar, I find that difficult to believe. Maybe all the chicas are enrolled in cultural programs during the day.

You're "spinning" things to align with your argument. Nobody said Sosua would be a "hi tech location". Or that they're going to market it as such. It's nothing but a Zone to help small entrepreneurs get started. That's all. It's been done successfully across the United States in many small and large towns. Someone's idea was that it might attract IT. It may not. Maybe they'll attract some guy that builds Chairs. It's not really important what gets built or started.

I knocked on the door at Passions till my knuckles started to bleed. Finally a girl walked by and took pity on me. I'm ok now.

Forced culture is wonderful. Culture is something that grows organically, not something that is manufactured. Culture is in the heart and sole of it locals, its people. I have not seen a whole bunch of natural culture around here.

...especially the guy peeing on the wall across from citylights yesterday.

Now THAT would be a zona muy FRANCA. And the talent pool of potential, um, "entreprenuers" far exceeds that of available "IT" professionals. Maybe they could merge it with the new "red light" district for maximum effect.

All this unfounded scepticism. I can totally see Sosua as a high tech hub of, say, the Caribbean porn industry: just need to buy a bunch of video cameras and convert some of those beach casitas into studios. The talent is already on the ground.

One person is already doing that now. I'm not going to link to a NSFW site here, but it has something to do with the word "toticos".
