Seems to me with a nick of "Black Dog" you would fit right in.

I jest but it did cause a chuckle when I saw your post.

On a serious note though, Haiti could do with some good fortune so let's hope it happens!

Just to point out that I am neither a roughian or a scallyway as my mother was forever telling my teachers! :ermm:

Haiti has had an upscale Royal Caribbean port at La Badie just west of Cap Haitien for years now.
So that makes 4 NC Hispaniola stops if you count the dregs that still visit Saman?.

Samana is done. no more ships. the 18% return rate did not help.

Is the cruise port in Port-au-Prince still operational after the quake? Mr. AE used to work in the casino on a cruise ship out of Miami before we got married, and it docked in Haiti every Tuesday - I flew over from SD a couple of times to meet it.

So long ago that it almost feels surreal now

Why did Samana fail and what makes them think that the POP one will work?

Samana did not have deep enough water for the ships to come shoreside, and those who wanted to get on terra firma had to get on some tender boats from ship to shore. secondly, Samana was a snooze, and nobody cared, as was shown by an 18% return rate, compared to places like Barbados with 52%. POP will work for Carnival. but not for POP.

I do not think that cruise ships have come into PauP for a long time. The port in Labadie is kept strictly wired off from the country, as I understand, and while there is are sea attractions such as sailing, and some limited vendors on the beach, the crowds of begging children and the poverty are hidden from the tourists.

Tortuga makes a lot of sense since there is nothing there and they can do the same thing. Arrange sea adventures and create a safe space for the tourists who will have the illusion that they have "been" to Haiti.

There might be other destinations that might be available such as Jacmel. But on the whole, I think tourists want to see the charm of places like Grenada rather than the poverty of Haiti. (although Grenada is a long way away and I do not know if folks have that much time any more)

I am sorry to hear about Samana.. although perhaps not. They used to come up to Las Terreanas in these big almost double decker buses and look down on the people as if we were in a zoo.,

in the brochures that Royal Caribbean prints for Labadee, they go to pains to create the impression that it is not in Haiti. it is completely walled off from the rest of the surrounding area. in the first year of operation, it created the princely amount of 60 jobs for Haitians.

Labadie has been used for years as a popular port destination For Royal Caribbean, passengers do get to see much of Haiti, but that is the same for most cruise ships that have an private island resort destination. Royal Caribbean also have Coco Cay in the Bahamas. Costa Cruise lines has Isla Catalina south of La Romana, Dominican Republic (they actually own the docking rights and sell the docking to other cruise lines such as Celebrity Cruise Lines amongst others, Norwegian Cruise lines has Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas, Disney have Castaway Cay in the Bahamas, Holland America have Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas, Princess have Princess Cay in the Bahamas, MSC have Cayo Levantado in the Dominican Republic....Carnival having Tortuga makes perfect sense. In case you are wondering how I know, I worked on cruise ships for 5 years.........

Labadee, Haiti - More than Meets the Eye - Ordinary Traveler

It now provides 300 jobs plus another 200 for folks who sell their products. And the cruise line pays $6 per person to the government of Haiti .. making it the largest source of tourist revenue to the country.

the people know that they are in Haiti. AND most likely now, after the earthquake, that they have not seen the "real Haiti"

although there are, in fact, lots of other places like that in Haiti..
