From today's Sosua News:

The hospital CMC (Cabarete Medical Center), located just outside Sos?a at freeway to Cabarete now has an extra floor. Monday afternoon August 4 Father Bernardo V?squez solemnly declared this extra floor with 16 rooms opened with a blessing.

The opening ceremony took place in the presence of many dignitaries including mayor Ilana Neumann of Sos?a, Ginette Bournigal, Ernesto Peralta and President Thomas Callender of the Association of Hotels and Restaurants in Sos?a and Cabarete. The medical director of the hospital Dr Roberto Espitale CMC thanked those present for their support and involvement in the project. The CMC has a number of highly qualified specialists under contract, who they can invoke when needed. The hospital has all the latest equipment needed for these specializations and also has an extensive laboratory. Moreover, it has the most modern equipment in radiology of the north coast (including a CT scan). This is a private clinic, but patients who are insured with, among others, Monumental, Amor y Paz, ARS or SDS Forturo get reimbursed their medical care.

Good to hear. I was appalled by their Xray "equipment" a couple of years ago when I needed them.

Having been in the hospital on that floor just last week, keep in mind that the rooms still reek of paint and wall filler. I refused 2 rooms before we found one that didn't smell.

Paint and wall filler is not so bad. Trained people, gloves, what is this, the real world? Would you like an egg in your beer. Just because the sign says hospital and they have a new floor does not make it a REAL hospital. I have gotten over this by bringing my own gloves anytime I have blood drawn, etc. They wash out and reuse the gloves as cost saving. Just because they have gloves on does not mean they are new. I want to see them come out of the sealed wrapper. Unelss its an emergency go to HOMS in Santiago. HOMS is like a real hospital. No smell of urine, modern equipment and most medical workers wear new clean gloves.
Yep, Im paranoid but still physicall healthy.

I had a CT done there (had compression fracture of t2) to see how i healed etc. Two very young Haitian nurses performed the test... Then cardiologist took a look on the paper that was given to him and said that im fine and handed me an envelop with CD. Completely clean CD... With nothing on it... Mind you the test is stupid expensive and even with insurance i paid 3000 pesos. For an empty CD. I so wish they had real doctors in there.

I feel we should be very appreciative to have a hospital nearby. My husband has had three stays at CMC, 2 of which were surgeries. Contrary to the experience of others we were very happy with the quality of care. We know of several neighbors who would not have survived their injuries had it not been for the surgeries they had at CMC. Wherever we have lived, hospital bashing seems to be a common sport. Let's not bite the hand that might heal us!

Abuela I do agree with you but I think it is important for people on the NC to know that it may be important to get a second opinion in Santiago or SD for certain things.
I just have heard and seen way to many mistakes there. I am sure it is an improvement from having nothing before.

The food there is the best Hospital food I have ever tasted, I crave some sort of potato thing they had!!
