From today's Sosua News:

Thursday evening, August 28 real estate broker Juan Perdomo spoke in Kaffe restaurant in Puerto Plata. He expressed, in the presence of the commander of the Tourist Police General Juan Carlos Torres Robiou and other notables, his concern about the ongoing crime and prostitution present in Sos?a and Cabarete. He recalled that the first source of income is tourism and that the money Dominicans abroad send home is the second source of income for the Dominican Republic. Therefore, it is important that tourists feel safe when visiting Sos?a and Cabarete. Mr. Perdomo spoke to those present in his capacity as a board member of the Association for Sustainable Development of Sos?a (ADSSos?a). He plead that safety should be improved and prostitution moved to another place, far away from the city center.

Prostitution attracts drug-related crime. According to Mr. Perdomo, families need to be able to walk down the street safely both day and evening. If crime and prostitution are not tackled, eventually the tourists stay away and the main source of income for Sos?a and Cabarete is in danger.

Anyone from or visitors to Amsterdam like to chime in. Johns or families need protection when putas, get too aggressive. I do not think crime and prostitution can be used in the same sentence as to insinuate they are equal in severity. Does drug use include overdosing on Viagra?

No less amazing than someone posting what you've presumptuously posted. And what "mark" are you talking about? If one thinks those who are significant stake holders, vote and are able to move the chess pieces around on the board, aren't going to make changes, I'll put my bet on them doing it their way eventually. Mark that down and refer to it in the months and years to come.

Juan Perdomo must have some business interest in the Sosua and cabarette area.

you think? what is going on in Sosua is the big land grab. as there is less and less available biosphere in North America and Europe, those citizens will be heading to these climes, looking to continue their lives. that means buying land, and houses. Sosua has certain already established attributes that make it a prime choice. the RE boys have to get into bed with the politicos to create the kind of ecosystem that will attract foreign buyers. it will be a game of whack-a-mole, since the prostitutes will aggregate elsewhere, and when foreigners take a liking to that place, the same show will be repeated, different act.

Juan Perdomo knows very well what works for him and that is foreign buyers. Not whore-mongers. Read the writing on the wall ..... (of his new development)..

I used to live in the Pijp, Amsterdam and worked in central near the red light district. Amsterdam has its fare share of
problems too. Throughout the red-light there is no shortage of drug pushing north east Africans. They will and sometimes do
get very aggressive.

As I said before in the other thread Safety in POP (basically the same as this thread).. Prostitution brings with it many
different vices and plenty of low life's who are willing to cater to those vices. Unfortunately it is a well known fact these
other vices often attract criminals therefor with it unwanted criminal behavior.

The Dutch have realized this and therefor passed laws regarding prostitution being done in a controlled environment. It
seems to work quite well. Is it perfect? No it is not but it is as Mr. Perdomo stated Thursday night, an idea that will have a
positive impact on the community for those not wishing to take part in these vices.
They should just all agree to create an area where the prostitution can flourish and at the same time
be controlled. Problem solved.

I assume you live and have invested in Sosua?

I have never felt unsafe in Sosua, walking around night and day. All around, not just the little strip of bars on PC.
Crime and prostitution are not causally linked or Amsterdam and Hamburg etc. have it all wrong.Crime comes from poverty, differentials in wealth and opportunity.Employment is the key to mitigating that, not laundry money and unfinished projects.
JP is Sosua real estate, not tourism so they will listen to him.

Some stakeholders are finally seeing a downturn in tourism and are staring to ask why and how to rebuild the 'New Sosua'.

What we post on DR is immaterial.

Yes I live on the N. Coast and yes I have investment here, and yes I agree that of crap posted on DR1 has zero significance to anyone other than perhaps a few DR1 posters, if that. I've done business here for nearly 20 years, and there is no 'recent downturn' in tourism, tourism has been on a slide since 9/11/2001, I've seen it first hand. If the name of the largest realtor/developer on the N.Coast is not familiar then I might assume one doesn't live here.

I saw the downturn in the US economy before 9/11. People just find that date easy to remember. I agree, there is no sudden downturn. It has been ongoing for the 11 years I have lived here full time.

Multiple Causes

(...) there is no sudden downturn. It has been ongoing for the 11 years I have lived here full time.

And so, could this 'development' not just have reached such a low, that RE agents (like Perdomo foremost) would even take to accuse a single cockroach to be responsible for the dried up market??? :lick:

This is not a single cause problem.

No matter how any spin doctor puts it SOSUA is a ****hole. Take away the putas and drug dealing motos and you still have a ****hole. The beach is the only salvation.

your notion will soon be proven. they will get rid of the girls, and, by extension the motos, and it still will be a cow town. as far as beach; there are hundreds of beaches in the DR that are better than Sosua.

I do not often post but I think this subject is worth some input. There are forces at work who intend to make Sosua family friendly. PC gets closed off at night for pedestrian traffic. Bars get closed. Passions gets closed and the owner spends some time in the hoosegow. Juan Perdomo, who typically is quite discreet and works behind the scenes, speaks publicly on the need to move prostitution out of Sosua proper. $400-500K USD condos are going up at Hispaniola Beach-and are selling. The times they are a-changin.

Linking drugs with prostitution is an old ploy. I have never been threatened or harassed in Sosua at any time. In the future we will see if the changes put in place turn out to attract real estate buyers or no. I think not but if I am wrong ill be the first to admit it. Iwant Sosua to thrive in the future.it is great little town and I have a significant real estate investment here. In the current climate I would not buy more. Be interesting what these same people whip have to say if we end up in a downhill spiral. Something like tourism is down all over, eh? That will float for a while but not forever.
