4 of us will be in Santo Domingo between Christmas and New Year's Eve, and want to inquire as to a private guide for a walking tour for either a half or a full day. Please advise as to availability; cost; and itinerary.

Are you looking for a tour of the Colonial Zone? The historical area of Santo Domingo. Just go down to the heart of the zone in front of the Hotel Conde de Penalba and there are many bi-lingual tour guides waiting or check with your hotel. They might to be able to arrange something.

I believe the OP is looking for a *recommendation* for someone in particular (ie, call this guy, here's his number, he was great, etc).

In Zona Colonial be certain to use guides that wear the ID card from Tourism - usually in a blue shirt and in my opinion the best ones can be found in Parque Duarte on Padre Billini between Duarte and Hostos. If you want or need the tour in English.... test the verbal skill of the person first, for most can get by to earn your business, then you will suffer through the next two hours missing every other word. A group of four - you can expect to pay a minimum of $40 for two hours - you can give more if you are happy with the service. Enjoy!

The most important monuments to visit are:

Start at Convento de los Dominicos on Arzobispo Billini street. This church can be visited using an audio tour available at the premises.
It is worth it.
Walk to:
Parque Colon and the Santo Domingo Cathedral, first in the Americas.
Walk up: Calle Las Damas
Visit the Museo de las Casas Reales. They have a small museum area that explains the colonisation period.
Visit the Alcazar de Colon.
