Attention all long time residents of Sosua and AAASosua supporters around the World.

If you don?t already know her, this is Chula. She is now the oldest living street dog in the Sosua Batey area.
She started off living at Sosua Beach and the guy in charge of the parking lot was her caretaker, of sorts. She had two other friends there but they have moved on a long time ago. Her and her friends where some of the first efforts of AAAS to make sure all the local dogs where sterilized and vaccinated.

The caretaker either changed or left or something but Chula would not leave the beach area. Then , for reasons unknown to us she came up the street and started hanging around our Thrift Store, located next to Check Point Bar, behind North Coast Reality. It could be that we always kept food and water available for any of the streetdogs that were passing by. At that time there were many more free roaming dogs and perhaps Chula was not that social so she continued on up the street to Pedro Clisatante and found a comfy spot at North Coast Dive. There may be other places she frequented but North Coast always kept in touch with us if she needed anything.
She would spend time between the shop/street and the home of Karen and Mike owners of North Coast Dive and true animal activists. They noticed she suddenly was not herself and contacted us to see what we could do. They brought her to AAAS and we were lucky enough to have two veterinarians available to examine her and make a diagnosis. We also have the benefit of a donated blood analysis machine to help identify her problem quickly so we could quickly set up a treatment plan.
Unfortunately the diagnosis is not good she has liver disease which cannot be cured but does sometimes respond to treatment so we immediately got her started and hoped for the best. She must be almost 14 years old and for a dog living on the street this is a very long life, doing what she liked to do.
We don?t know what the future will bring and we know her time with us is growing short , however she has responded nicely to treatment and is eating and wandering around the clinic as she likes.
We are hoping she recovers enough to return to North Coast and Karen and Mike so she can spend her final days as she spent her life. This may not happen but for now she is feeling well and resting comfortably.
Almost all our original streetdogs are gone. Sousa/Batey is no longer a place where free roaming dogs are safe to roam and greet local tourists. Some of the original have passed on living free and others have found sanctuary in loving homes.
If you have been a long time visitor to the Sosua area you have witnessed many years of work and dedication by AAAS,volunteers, local business and international assistance as all the local dogs where sterilized, vaccinated, kept healthy and were allowed to live their lifestyle.
Things have changed considerably over the years. Downtown is no longer a good place for free roaming dogs and their original purpose of keeping the community safe is no longer needed.
As things change so has the function of AAAS. With the influx of many new animal rescue groups resources are limited and our role in the community is to do what we do best and provide access to local pet owners with limited resources a safe, humane sterilization for their pet.
Others provide rescue services etc, some do it all.
We rely on our 17 years of experience with Dominican Dogs, skilled surgeons, trained volunteers and state of the art clinic to make sure everydog gets the benefit of a safe humane surgery.
We have worked hard over the years to establish relationships ,upgrade our supplies and equipment and to continue to make our program the best it can be. We know how to best utilize resources to maximize the number of dogs/cats that can be sterilized safely.
We are not about the numbers as they are not numbers, they are living breathing creatures that share this space with us.
We cannot do it alone. We need local residents, other rescue groups to assist in getting us the dogs/cats that need us most.
.
We would like to thank all who have supported us and continue to support us in the future. Without you this program would not be possible

Poor Chula. Helped look after her for many years.

Jim : Perhaps if numbers were known people might be more inclined to donate. With no numbers there is no way in knowing if the donation was actually used nor is there a way to know if AAAS is making a difference...something to think about...Tom
