If you can avoid it, try to stay away from driving in Santo Domingo as much as possible between now and January 15, because it will cost you.

AMET and police are running wild in the hunt for extra cash for Christmas and are taking advantage of higher up orders to set up road blocks, undercover and hidden angles to stop for any type of traffic violation, specially looking for inspection stickers, renovation of plate stickers, and the biggest one..guns. Of great importance is the fact that according to their estimates 85% of the inspection stickers are fake and were sold unsuspectedly to us by counterfeiters. Police will not forgive you because you were duped. They figure if you were not really inspected with equipment, you knew it was fake.

Avoid areas such as Villa Juana, Ciudad Nueva, Villa Mella, Los Minas, Ensanche Luperon, major intersections, the malecon, most poor neighborhoods where the agents are not properly supervised and are allowed to freely look for extra income by their superiors, who will get part of the take. Under no circumstances take a yellow or red light. They specifically target these violators to have a perfect alibi. If you get caught be friendly and just pay up. Arguing will get you nowhere. These guys "no cogen corte", just money. AMET guys are more difficult. Everywhere you see a smokey hat, take a detour. Dont risk it! Most of the grey uniforms ride cheap scooters and disappear in the crowds unnoticed. They have a back rod with a light that turns on only when they chase you. Dont help these bastards buy their roasted pork for New Years. Almost all my friends have been caught. Since I only drive in safe areas, never get caught.

Good advice, TW. Anybody with 2 ounce of brain will ALLWAYS avoid neighbourhoods like Los Minas, Vietnam, Capotillo, etc, etc. or anywhere else where the more unsupervised AMET or their other PN colleagues practice their own type of Law Enforcement.
