Minustah to be asked to bolster security for truckers in Haiti

Speaking at a breakfast meeting on New Dominican Foreign Policy with members of the Dominican Republic Industries Association yesterday, Thursday 16 April 2015, Minister of Foreign Relations Andres Navarro announced plans for a meeting with the head of the United Nations peacekeeping force in Haiti (Minustah), Sandra Honore, to discuss the safety of Dominican truckers who transport cargo to Haiti. Violent incidents are still affecting their safety. Navarro said that the matter had been discussed with Haitian authorities during the latest meeting of the Mixed Bilateral Commission and they had agreed to strengthen border security on the route used by most truckers, especially Dajabon to Ouanaminthe and Cap-Haitien.

But Navarro says that security is still inadequate and that they will be appealing to Minustah after inviting Honore to visit the Ministry of Foreign Relations to discuss ways of strengthening the Haitian police.

Navarro commented that trucker unions in Haiti are similar to the ones in the Dominican Republic that want to monopolize transport, which contributes to the conflict of interests that is also affecting the flow of goods to Haiti.

As a solution, Dominican truckers union Fenatrado is proposing the construction of warehouses on the border. Navarro said this was discussed in the framework of the bilateral commission.

Minustah's mission is not to protect international border traficking.

Leave the goods at the border and let the buyers pick them up.

No need for drivers to risk their lives.

In time of protest, the people can simply attack the warehouses.

lol..lol..that's for advanced countries...and even in those countries we still see violent protests.

If the people are angry, they have every right to attack.

leave the goods at the border.

the Haitian truckers are attacking because they want the Dominican truckers to offload their cargo so that Haitian truckers can carry the cargo through Haitian territory/

MINUSTAH protection might be a short term solution but may incite further violence since many in Haiti see MINUSTAH as a foreign occupation and that action might be taken as an armed invasion.

This will make Dominican products more expensive in the Haitian markets, allowing perhaps a bit of protection for the regrowth of local industries such as cement, and will provide employment to local Haitian truckers.

In the long run.. this is probably going to be the only solution as these attacks will most likely continue.

That is the plan with the long term goal of forcing Haiti to produce and also finding other trading partners.

Cuba and Jamaica are a short boat ride away.

Haiti isn't a country -- it's a criminal enterprise with an airport.

A lawless, barren land overrun by voodoo, cannibalism and zombies.

At the end of the day, France caused the problems there and it's their responsibility to clean up the mess.

More reasons for DR to stop all trades with this uncivilized negro nation.

1. close all the consulates. there is no need for them.

2. stop issuing visas to Haitians for any reason (students ma azz lol)

3. seal the border and stop the tradings.

Nothing good can come out of relations with Haiti.

And NO it is not France's responsibility.

Makes you wonder how things would be now if they had a functioning government in place.

Haiti was never the pearl of anything. That title was given to the slave colony of St-Domingue because of the profits.

Haiti kept using that title also claimed by Cuba without any historical perspective.

These pictures of a much smaller potoprens and some white tourists enjoying themselves are meaningless. Nothing was done for the masses.

Yes Duvalier was the cyclone responsible for the current situation.

Under his mafioso gang, Haiti exiled its professional class, zombified the population and accelerated the concentration of wealth at the top.

In his hatred/envy of the mulatto elite, he favored the levantine merchants elevating them to the top.

He made some attempt to create a black middle class.

The mulatto elite, the arab merchants and the new black middle class all looked down on the dark african majority and did little to develop anything.

Haiti missed the period of fastest economic growth in modern history. A period which saw several poor countries become middle income countries.

And now the neo-duvalierists are back under the guise of neo-liberalism...and with guidance from US and the trustworthy Clintons.

Let's see how that works out.

France made a demand with threats and the part-french worthless haitian president agreed to pay it on the back of the haitian black majority.

The black generals Kristoff or Desalin if they were still alive may have had a different reaction.

France is not responsible.......the black majority is responsible for having allowed minority rule to take over.

It is what it is/

It was not simply France but a grand coalition - if anything the United States bares more blame for not standing with its new sister republic. Haiti is only 15 years younger than the US but the US backed France's claim..as did Great Britian.. and really hoped that the little slave revolt would not get up off its knees.

I certainly agree that we must always remember the brutality of the slave colony that was called "the pearl"

And I agree with the suspicions of the neo liberals..

here is a discussion of a few years back from the Corbett list.. by Jean Poincy.. posted with permission
