Minustah to be asked to bolster security for truckers in Haiti
Speaking at a breakfast meeting on New Dominican Foreign Policy with members of the Dominican Republic Industries Association yesterday, Thursday 16 April 2015, Minister of Foreign Relations Andres Navarro announced plans for a meeting with the head of the United Nations peacekeeping force in Haiti (Minustah), Sandra Honore, to discuss the safety of Dominican truckers who transport cargo to Haiti. Violent incidents are still affecting their safety. Navarro said that the matter had been discussed with Haitian authorities during the latest meeting of the Mixed Bilateral Commission and they had agreed to strengthen border security on the route used by most truckers, especially Dajabon to Ouanaminthe and Cap-Haitien.
But Navarro says that security is still inadequate and that they will be appealing to Minustah after inviting Honore to visit the Ministry of Foreign Relations to discuss ways of strengthening the Haitian police.
Navarro commented that trucker unions in Haiti are similar to the ones in the Dominican Republic that want to monopolize transport, which contributes to the conflict of interests that is also affecting the flow of goods to Haiti.
As a solution, Dominican truckers union Fenatrado is proposing the construction of warehouses on the border. Navarro said this was discussed in the framework of the bilateral commission.
