Marino Vinicio Castillo and the FNP break from government
Marino Vinicio Castillo, Pelegrin Castillo Seman and Jose Ricardo Taveras, president, first vice president and secretary general of the Fuerza Nacional Progresista (FNP), a minority party that has been a political ally of the PLD since 1993, have announced their resignation from their government posts.
Marino Vinicio Castillo is resigning as general director of Ethics and Integrity in Government and Executive Branch advisor on programs to fight drug trafficking, while Pelegrin Castillo will resign from his post as Minister of Energy and Mines. Migration director Jose Ricardo Taveras and National Border Council president Nolerto Rondon are also resigning.
Their announcement follows the PLD Political Committee's decision to submit a bill for Congress to change the 2010 Constitution to allow for presidential re-election. The FNP states that a National Referendum must be held before presenting the bill. The party considers that a referendum is the only legal and constitutional path to reform. A Referendum could cost RD$1 billion, according to estimates by PLD Political Committee member Felix (Felucho) Jimenez.
The Fuerza Nacional Progresista issued its public statement yesterday, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 announcing their break with the government.
