I am surprised that noone posted about last night's earthquake.

It was about 19:20 h when we felt it (south of Las Terrenas), quite a shake (maybe 3.8 or so), but of short duration (maybe 1 - 2 sec. only).
Well, if nobody else felt it, it must have been very local... :cross-eye
No, I wasn't drunk and my son ran out first.

I didn't even feel the bigger ones that occurred last year that everyone else seemed to notice. I guess that's a good thing. If I feel the ground move, it might be worth worrying about...

It really depends where you are if you feel it.

The BIG ONE , a few yrs ago (Haiti) was a non-event at our house.... nothing.

The phone rang - our neighbors down the hill calling.

Water sloshed out of their pool and they scurried out into the open from dinner.

When they asked me if everything was OK --
I said 'Like what, do we have enough wine?'

we felt nada.... their place shook badly.... 1/4 to 1/2 miles apart

In 2010, our house and land swayed enough that we all got dizzy, and the rocking chair I was sitting and reading in was rocking and rolling. No shaking.

Another time.... I watched the TV rock back/forth and feared it would fall over.

Me? I froze in my chair -- useless

Hmm, I am not so sure about this. Caliche is not solid rock.

We also live on a 'caliche' hill.
This stuff is former reef sediments, and has a lot of crevices, cavities and sometimes even small caves; it is karst.

IMO this could have a buffering effect, dampening the shocks.
Or cave in all together....

What do the geologist say?

I have two properties, both on cliffs :

one is like Swiss Cheese - lava rock , caves galore.... can't hold water

the other is solid caliche, no crevices or caves

as for the safety issues......... I don't know, but the buffering idea is interesting
