On PR Plates

From the other thread:

All I can say is, that there was a guy in Las Terrenas who drove his car (white Chrysler PT Cruiser) with a PR license plate 'for ages'.
But as you know, laws are different in Saman?... ;)

An International License of o NO use in the DR. This has been discussed before. Just take your chances and live life.

I know people that have been driving in the DR for 20 years with NO license. They have one but it expired 16 years ago. They seem to be doing fine.

I would say that if the car is registered in PR than he would not qualify for insurance in the DR. He would need to talk to HIS insurance company in PR and see if he can get any additional insurance while driving in the DR. His drivers license is inconsequensal as he is not a DR resident and will not be. If he is coming for 3 months he will have to drive using his current license and hope he is not involved in any problems. He should be aware with PR plates he may become a target for DR police shakedowns.

well he has press credentials and the police here are very respectful of that so I do not think that shakedowns will be an issue

I doubt the PR insurance companies will cover him here

I am sure my local agent can arrange some coverage

or he can just drive without it

no worries

Does anyone know about driving around here with a car from Puerto Rico?

Is it possible to get insurance for 90 days?

Is that how long it will be legal to drive here with a Puerto Rican license?

thanks.

1. Pre-inspection of vehicle 1 week before departure;
2. Owner must accompany vehicle to DR;
3. Title must be free and clear and original in hand;
4. Vehicle must be registered and insured (proof in hand);
5. Must buy a liability policy upon arrival in SD;
6. Can only legally stay in DR for 30 days...after that the vehicle incurs a per diem fine;
7. Vehicle can only be registered in Puerto Rico or the DR if it is coming in by ferry.

Other rules and restrictions apply.

link?

only 30 days?

is per diem collected at ferry and do you know how much it is?

pre inspection by whom? for what?

(medfly? medical? --oh just kidding.. but there are some silliness here - as in you have to have a medical certificate to pay the exit fee at the migration in the capital but not if you go to the airport)

MA:

Hard to link to personal knowledge, but try DOT (Department of Transportation).

Yes, only 30 days.....it is tied to Dominican Law as to how long you can legally drive in the country on a foreign drivers license.

Per diem fine comes from DGA and the minimum per diem fine is $20.00 a day.

Pre-inspection is to certify the vehicle is not reported stolen, no outstanding fines/tickets issued against the vehicle.

Vehicle cannot have any broken/cracked/chipped glass.

Any non-original parts on the vehicle must have receipts.

You cannot transport commercial goods in the vehicle.

thanks Playa

who does the pre inspection?
Is that Dominican authorities at the dock or does he need some sort of certificate from the PR government?

I will search the web page..

The 30 days makes sense - but perhaps he can get insurance for longer?

Did I not read in a couple of places that he would be legal to drive for 90?

He is a photojournalist and coming with a jeep - so it will be expensive for him to rent an SUV for that time.

Thanks again.

Pre-inspection is in Puerto Rico.

The time lines and the fines imposed are on the Dominican side of things and I would guess the fine is collected at the ferry upon his return much like the overstay fee for individuals.

Perhaps he can obtain waivers as a journalist.

I only quote what I know to be law or procedure. What actually happens is perhaps another story.

Ok, tell me, why would a DR insurance agent sell insurance to someone who is not a resident of the DR and has a car registered in another country? That makes absolutely no sense. Good luck with that.

Take is money, perhaps. Actually provide insurance, unlikely.

He won't need a license to drive here, just a 500 peso note in his pocket.
I drove for 20 years with no license.

Still DO!!!!!!!
