I've been in Hig?ey just about 48 hours now and lovin' it. Slower pace than other cities this size and far more cleaner. Only bad incident I've since so far was at the Basilica, which is more than likely left by tourists.

Open air market in town loaded with local produce. Pictures of that soon. Big festival de caballeros yesterday with maybe 300, 400 cowboys going around a big loop every ten minutes.

Slower pace? Well, it's been insanely hot the past 2 weeks, so anybody who doesn't have to be outside is not outside.
Cleaner than other comparable cities? I think you must be in a wrong place.

I dont like Higuey, lot of people over there are a little spoiled by big money from PC and the city happens to be overpriced (a little, by dominican standards)
btw. unless you look at the map upside down, its East of DR, not south-west :)

Haters gotta hate..

Went to a small birthday last night at a local dance school, then to big disco with something like1000 ppl or more. Called it quits about 2AM and they were still coming in.

As for the streets having some garbage, sure it's here, Just not as much. In Santiago, I had to cross the street to avoid rotting offal in the gutter and any dumpsters or garbage cans were overflowing. This is the view from my hotel balcony in Hig?ey. Not spotless, but typical of what I've seen around town, and the dumpsters here get emptied:

they only cleaned up for the Festival weekend,
during regular weekends/days i find Higuey more dirty than other Cities,
here in PC we name Higuey Safacon-City for a reason.
from that "nice" market all garbage is usually building up one hill at its one end(downhill side), lying out there all day long and sometimes not taken away at all for a day, smells on quiet a distance.
Higuey is usually very busy, not a slow pace area, full of crazy Motos, horns to hear everywhere.
i am there often, but to live IN that City is out of question to me.
too hectic, too loud, much too dirty.
during the Festivities in January and August, is the only times when i spend a couple nights in the City, at least I did in prior years, with the Horse of course.
seldomly saw the streets so clean as in your fotos above, only for the Festivities.

On the north coast and spent some time with Frank12 today. I was planning on staying until Friday, but it's dead up here. Only customer in O'Shay's at 6PM, then they got a trickle of dinner folks around 7. First visit to Sosua in over eight years. I think I saw three tourists in town and maybe a dozen on the beach around 3PM. Bus ride from Hig?ey to SD in some Chinese bus not designed for ppl over 5'6"..

I dunno what to say. The street fotos were taken Sunday after the festival, and they had another clean up crew working Monday morning.. There was a tipped garbage can in front of my hotel and it was cleaned up by 8AM. The mayor has a campaign going. This truck was followed by a clean up crew of about five guys who looked like Haitians:

The worst place I saw in town was the river bed on either side of a bridge.

Meanwhile Santo Domingo looked like an open dump with two foot high piles of garbage at some intersections, at least on the route between bus stations..

My only gripe so far is I haven't found a place yet that sells hot coffee with real milk instead of canned.
