I just been informed that Mike Christiansen--known here as MikeL has passed away in Sosua over the weekend. Mike lived large. He was a big boy with a lot of mass that attracted other nearby smaller objects to his gravitational pull. He was gregarious, loud, and fun. He loved the Dallas cowboys, beer and women, and was often seen driving around Sosua on a scooter three sizes too small. Although, because of recent health problems, he gave up the drink. However, before giving up the Devil's juice, he would come into O'Shay's for Happy Hour and drink a half a keg of beer before Happy Hour ended.
I never witnessed one man drink so much beer in one sitting as Mike. I liked him. A lot. He liked me...either that or he did one hell of a good job pretending to like me. He came in every Saturday afternoon and sat with me and Big Frank and watched girls walk past. He was a girl watcher and proud of it. He was a beer drinker and proud of it. He loved food and was proud of it.
He lived in the USA for several years before being escorted to the airport and sent back to Canada. Apparently, he depleted everyone's Happy Hour specials in one sitting. Chinese restaurants locked their doors when they saw him coming. He ate like a Killer Whale and I loved him for it. He and I both ate like Killer Whales. I must say, Mike was one of the few people on this planet who could hang with me for a few hours before throwing in the towel and focusing on draft beer and bikinis.
I liked him a lot and will miss him dearly. He must be in a Chinese Happy Hour Special right now somewhere.
Frank
