I have been to the DR many times but never went to an all inclusive. I am pretty sure this question has been answered before but what do these "animators" really do? I have heard various things but are they really high priced sankie pankies? Do the women find them better than the typical pro's that don't get the backing of the resorts? Just wondering.

Way too funny

Just wondering, or just shopping! I am not sure what you are trying to find out by your question.

What is an animator? They are males and females that are part of the hotel staff that are employed to get the tourists in the resort to take part in resort "activities". Get them into the spirit of the vacation.

They also have a terrible reputation for being sankie's and often have a few girlfriends/boyfriends in foreign countries that send them money and gifts. After all, they are in love, and true love is a beautiful thing :)

Cost? I don't know the cost of sankie's. Were you looking for an hourly rate?

Do the hotels actually encourage this? or do some individuals who have these jobs just see an opportunity and try to take advantage of it?

animator conspiracy

I wasn't really inquiring how much they cost. I was just trying to dicpher the "class" level. I would have to assume that the animators are higher up on the food chain than the average Jose on the beach. I was mainly just wondering if the hotels are getting a cut of the money that the animators get??? hum... conspiracy theory...

So, Theresa

Are you saying you think the hotel actually plant these people there, under the guise of having the job of getting the tourists involved in the beach vollyball, and leading the aquafitness, teaching meregue, etc, but really they're just onsite prostitutes employed by the hotel?

The answer is no the resorts do not get a cut in the profits that any employee makes off the grounds of the resort after hours. The management plays blind to the fact that they employ ummm ummm escorts. In most cases it is very secretive so that the employee does not lose their job at a resort. I would not consider these escorts to be better class but simply better at what they do . We all know that practice makes perfect and they get the most practice because they get the most opportunity. Now, some people may get angry at these comments about the animation teams extra activities but......sometimes the truth hurts. Everyone of them will deny that they take part in any activity outside of their regular work. Remember it is a different culture and people in the DR do what they need to do to make enough money for the family. Whatever your opinion of the animators is one fact that remains is that they work extremely hard for many hours each day to make people's vacations fun. An animators motto is "es en todo inclusivo"

I know this is a hot topic, but if any of my Dominican friends heard that they would be so offended. ...that the hotel take a share of their money for their "other job"??
We have friends now that were resort workers and we have gone back every year to visit them, they no longer work at the resort and they either work in Santo Domingo (i.e. at the phone company) or have gone back to school. They never wanted anything from us, when we visited them we brought them a CD...because we wanted to . I have a friend of mine their for 6 months doing volunteer work, and she went there planning to find a place to rent and one of our friends wouldn't even hear of it. He invited her to stay with him, his brother and his mom. And his mom is offended when she offers her some money. She will eventually look for a place, but the point is, there is nothing going on between them or other friends. I just felt I should share that, in case someone who knows nothing of the DR may read the earlier comments and just generalize it to all the animation staff being sanki panki's. I know alot of this "off resort" work goes on, I've seen it, but it seems that ALL the animation staff do this job so it's easier to find their clients, which is not the case all the time!! Unless we were just lucky to have found the minority who are not sanki panki's.

Speaking of Dominican friends...

I have a very good buddie down in the DR who I met when he was 11 years old, he has never asked for anything from us (my wife and I)...well I should say, has'nt for many years. He used to ask me for pesos when he was around 11 and 12, but since we have become good friends, and he is 26 now, he don't ask for anything except friendship. Every time we go,we go and see his Mother and buy her about 100.00 worth of groceries, and every time she starts to cry when we do it. Cludia (her name)always makes us a fantastic meal at her house. Our buddie, Jose...is a genuine friend, and when we go out, he buys a round of beers and then I buy a round, just like here in Canada. He also, as in a previous post, asks us to stay with him when we are down there. We don't because we want our privacy, but he would really like for us to take him up on it. So not all young Dominican guys are just out for something. People there are the same as people here. Jose don't make a lot of money, but he works full time and has for quite awhile (since he was 18 or so)I have'nt asked him what he makes, but I don't think that it is that much. My point is, there are just as many good people as there are not so good.....same as everywhere.
BTW does anyone know what a fellow that works in a grocery store would make per week? I figured around 600 pesos per week? Am I way off or close???

Crotchety, Persnickety, Cynical Old Fart, Applauds last two posts.

Those two posts should be held up as example of a lot of the things we see more frequently than we realize.

Most of us here are really turned off by the "Oh have you seen my love?" posts, and for the most part we turn on the poster like a pack of starving dingos.

these two posts are the very essence of what makes this place what it is...if not my "tattered shirt", well, a home cooked meal..

My most heartfelt congratulations for those two posts!! Dang that was good reading!

I did not intend to imply with my comments about animators that any of them are not nice people. I have friends who work as animators and dancers and they are just as loving and giving as the rest of my Dominican friends and aquaintances. I respect all people without judgement or prejudice.

what does it mean?

Where did the term sanki panki come from? ive heard of hanki panki, which is what some are saying the sanki pankis are getting upto!
Those animators work their butts off tho dont they, thay are full of energy, day in day out, i think they do a great job.
In the UK we have a holiday company called Club 18-30. It is a young persons anything goes, sex sells tour operator. I worked as a rep for them for 2 years. Its hard work man, much the same as the animators work but more, ahem, riske shall i say.
One of the job perks, along with working abroad in the sun, was , well women, simple as that. When you are wearing the badge and you are in charge, on stage so to speak, you do get alot of attention. And i as a younger lad, i grabbed that attention. So the way i see it, if those animators get a chance, hey u only live once, why shouldnt they enjoy themselves.
I cant believe as many animators are as cynical as to decieve their admirers into thinkin there was love there in order to make money. Sure it must go on, but i sometimes have very little sympathy with those who get duped that way. I personally never saw anything like that at the hotel in Sosua i just stayed at. As for Willys, well thats another question!

I guess the only way to know for sure if the guy is a sanki or just after a good time is if you have to pay him afterwards.... <IMG src="http://www.sassiessite.f2s.com/images/Smilies/evilpuh.gif">

how does that work?

So is it after a week of having a good time, they will tell you how much money that was? Or they pretend not to be sanki panki's and wait until you are about to leave to go home from vacation knowing you may feel very vulnerable and then they ask? Do they take this opportunity to make up some sob story of how much they need money because their mom is sick in the hospital or they have to pay their credit cards? If sanki panki's are prostitutes, don't they come straight out and tell you with price and everything? I can't say that I have come across any to know how they operate.

Women interested in Sankies

From reading a few of these posts from women, I just get the feeling some are veryyyyy intrigued by Sankydom.

But ladies, dont be shy. Come out straight and say it. Wanna try a sanky?

Ok. Sankies are smart dudes. They got what it takes. Good "muela" and a good story to tell. They are sensitive to your problems. They know you come to relax from the stress of your job, your husband, your estranged boyfriend. So they offer you consolation and pretty soon you are in bed with them.

Thats the hook. Once they get you in bed, women are just like men, when they find somebody who gives them a good workout they pay. The sanky will soon begin to talk about how bad the week went, that his tuition is due and he didnt get paid enough, and so on. You are right there feeling sorry for the guy. Most foreign women are very naive. They fall for peddlers, children without shoes and clothes in the streets begging, shoeshine boys, mothers begging with children in their arms, and so on. Why not a crying sanky panky?

I know a guy who knows how to turn his eyeball around to make it appear he is blind. Children can be rented in DR for begging in the streets(I have seen Haitian women with white children!!)

Even at Najayo prison, outside the walls, visitors who come alone on family day can rent children for $50 pesos without food(You need to show you have children to visit on family days) Once you get in you turn the kid back to the guards(who are in the deal) and back in the streets again to be rented again.

Sanky Pankies know the psychology of foreigners. They know foreigners feel sorry for so-called poor Dominicans. All you have to do is read Debbies Travel forum and you see hundreds of tourists asking how to give candy, toys, etc.

So there is no secret about the sanky panky world. All you need is a healthy body, dark skin, athletic look and good lip service and you dont have to work for a living. Some even have web pages and advertise thru internet. The rest is resort psychology.

Well you don't necessarily need to be with a sanki to have a good time ;) ...and there are ones who aren't. Even if you didn't think he wasn't one and find him asking for money...what's the big deal if you just say nope, sorry I can't and make up a sob story for yourself. You're right perhaps there are alot of naive people, but as from the previous posts there are many good people you can find.

Most times I don't think they even need to ask directly for money or things -instead they will tell you what CDs they like, what baseball cap they wished they had, which cologne they like etc etc - all the time knowing you are making a mental note of it and will likely send them a care package once you get back home. Plus you are usually only one of many who are sending them care packages. Why do you think most of those animators dress so nicely and smell so good. By the way the 1st time I went to the DR in the late 1980s they were called Hanki Pankis or Ghostbusters hehe - how the term Sanki Panki came to be I'd love to know. Perhaps Sanki was the guy who started up a training school for all these animators so they could learn form his experiences. Something like a Gigilo in Training class.

Well then.....???????

Why doesn't every Dominican man have this job. I tell you.. if I was a Dominican man, than the resorts would be my heaven. Think about it.. a young guy good dresser, nice to look at and a wonderful dancer in the opinion of the american and european woman probably and the chance to make money and have sex.. I guess I just don't see any set back to the job? So come on guys, what are the drawbacks here?

Theresa: on why most men are not sankies

Theresa: The reason most men do not become sankies is that most of the women who go for these guys are dogs. Just look at them. Back in their countries they are the "grillos" of their town. They are so ugly they find Sankies handsome. But generally speaking, sankie pankies are guys that Dominican women would not touch with a ten foot pole.

First of Sankies are generally black or dark. Dominican women prefer light skin or white men if possible to better their race. And naturally, most professional and well to do available men are white or light skin, and women look for a better life too.

There is a saying in DR1 that white skin is by itself a profession. I have yet to know a white sankie pankie. There are white playboys who pray on tourists, but this is not the same as sankies. Sankies are a special breed. They dance everything. They like all type of sports. They like to wear revealing clothes. They even use make-up and many are known to be bi-sexual and would not hesitate to do any acts for money or advantage.

White playboys are mostly night people, very refined in their taste of clothes and only play gentlemen sports and would not think of playing around with guys. They deal with rich girls, fashion models and high society chics. They shone ugly women.
