Talking Noses

Another thought provoking interlude here at the office. What's up with Dominican women and the way they talk and gesture with their noses? You can put two or three Dominicanas together and they can carry on an entire conversation with their noses while not saying a word. What do the various movements mean? Is this ability to out wiggle Elizabeth Montgomery nature or nurture?

Chris,you really don,t know?

I have an American friend(Do I have any friends?Hum,)who has a nervous "condition" that makes him "wrinkle" up his nose like a rabbit a lot! One day in my office he became very angry with me."Stop making fun of my "condition!" he said. "What the hell are you talking about?" I said. "Stop wrinkling up your nose like a rabbit" he said."I,m sorry" I said,"That is how Dominicans get you to repeat what you said, without talking to you." "Shit"he said."That explains it!" "Explains what?" I said."That explains why Dominicans repeat everything they say 6 times when they talk to me!"......Now,the side-to-side thing, means that you disagree with, and usually don,t like a remark made by a third person,so you do the "nose thing" secretly to another person.Hope that helps. The "raise the eybrows and point with the head"means "Look over there, here comes," usually someone you don,t care to see,or talk to. You probably get that a lot! Criss Colon

Eyebrows/Head

Yeah, now that I think of it, I've been on the receiving end of that one too. What about crossing their arms and tapping their bicep with with two fingers?

Criss....That one about repeating what the person said is very true isn't it? Your not just making this up???? I've seen my buddies do this and that's what they say as well!

Oh Criss Colon got that right. A very good observation Kenosha...

As for those two finger taps on the biceps? It really means you are f****d....and you had better get a good excuse ready..

Now these are really Dominican things, for those that are keeping track....

Do you want to bet that PIB will chime in.?? Or Natasha? BTW, where is she?

How do you get your nose to move from left to right? Must be able to move it with your fingers or hand, right?
I can see the eyebrows and head nodding.
Yeah, where is Natasha?

Yeah, where's is Natasha?

When you grow up seeing the same gestures all the time you tend to think that it is an universal language. Far from the truth. The little thing with the nose, the Dominican equivalent of huh?! would leave my now insignificant other flabbergasted. It took him some time to figure it out, and every once in a while he'd call me Miss Little Frowning Nose. I have to confess I didn't find it the least amusing.

Natasha's still in Washington

I just spoke to Natasha today. She's back at her job in DC after a holiday vacation in SD and the British VI. She most definitely has not moved back to the DR. I forgot to ask her why she hasn't posted on the new board...
Regards,
Keith

2 more for the record

Right forearm raised;fist clenched at level of right shoulder;tap right elbow several times with palm side of the fingers of left hand,"Cheap SOB!" and... Can use either hand for this. Make a "Fist";extend index finger;place index finger lightly against outside middle of thigh.Move finger in an "up-and-down" motion perpendicular to the floor several times. Means;"Sexual intercoarse". Combined with raised eybrows, pouting lips, and a "head toss" in the direction of someone entering a, "Disco" for example,Can mean;"Does he,or she,do "IT?" Be careful, these can get you into trouble.Don,t get caught by the "third person" gesturing about them. Good Luck! Criss Colon

A couple more

Thumb and forefinger like you were turning a key, usually next to temple? Bad (kinky) hair!

Forefinger rubbed up and down other forearm?

Wrong color (Usualy too dark or darker than the person doing it!!LOL!)

Quickly pouted lips? Look who is coming!

Hand, slightly extended, opened with thumb up, and turning left to right, back and forth. " Just so-so" Which generally means not so hot...

Hands flat, one on top of the other, thumbs extended? Gay or are you gay? Not nice thing to do....used kiddingly or among good buddies!

Are we messed up or what?
