i am looking for recommendations for cheap and safe hotels in SD and las terrenas. preferably under 50 dollars per night. it would be good if the places had some sort of a rudimentary website or FB page.
thanks.

hmm, good question. safe area. maybe close to zona colonial so that the people can see more of the city without using public transport. and when i say 50 bucks per night i mean the room price, not per person.

Just about anywhere in Gazcue or la zona where a hotel is located would be a safe area.

I can easily think of at least a half dozen more but would have to do some research to get their webpage. Nowadays just about all hotels in SD have either webpage or FaceBook.

Really wouldn't matter. Arriving at Metro would only mean an additional ten minute taxi ride, and the taxi mafia would rip you off an additional 50 pesos compared to arriving at Caribe.

Metro, 20 minute ride with traffic.
Caribe, 10 minute ride with traffic.

Caribe go to Samana and then its 20 mins by guagua over the hill

http://caribetours.com.do/index.php/viajes/get_travel and there are also local buses which go directly to Las Terrenas

The buses of the local transportation (transporte Las Terrenas) are sometime congested, but the positive point is they arrive directly in the center of the village of Las Terrenas. The departure is from the center of Santo Domingo (Barahona street, ask for ?parqueo de PLAZA LAMA, close to DUARTE avenue). As the big Caribe Tour buses, they make a stop close to the airport, at the entrance of the ?Samana Toll Road?.
Departure (center of town) are @ 8:30AM ? 9:30AM ? 11:00 ? 1:30pm and 3:00pm
Departure (toll road stop) are @ 9:00AM ? 10:00AM ? 11:30 ? 2:00pm and 3:30pm

I used Hotel Riazor which the regulars on DR1 recommended.
It was clean and quiet and $50US

Breakfast is best avoided though.

Caribe may be a bit closer. Metro faster.
Transportes Las Terenas is the bus to LT
