I was wondering out of curious why is it necessary
to leave such a large deposit for the purpose of
renting a vehicle in the DR? This is not the practice of rental companies in the US and what is this deposit every used for and is there some reason that the rental could use never to return your deposit?

Thanks

They also secure a large deposit on your hotel room while here in the DR

I used to work for Budget Rent a Car ( As fleet wholesaler) when I lived In the states, Many times I ended up with a car that was missing some equipment...ie Battery changed, Spare tire missing, Radio, Bumper, even one time someone swaped the seats.

If you rent from a name brand company you should have less of a problem when you return the car in tact...

Also if you were to leave your Resort and the TV in your room was missing, You will have bought a new one on your Visa Card!

The Hotel you stay at will often secure a hold on your credit card until you leave.
