Last week a few of us packed up and drove from the Bavaro area to the north coast for a few days. Overall the trip was great.
The road from Nagua to Cabera could use a lot of work but the rest of the roads are in great shape.

We stayed at Hispanoial Residencial and the house we chose was nice but a little worn.
We spent time in Cabarete, Sousa, Confesi, and Puerto Plata. All good.

The strangest thing I have ever seen in the DR happened in Sosua. We had lunch in the Brittanica restaurant and when we where leaving I noticed the restaurant next door, The Jolly Roger was full but it was very quiet. Kinda spooky quiet. As we approached I thought maybe a prayer moment for a friend or something similar. But as we got closer it was even scarier than I thought. They whole crowd was playing bingo.

Thats right bingo. And they all weren't 70 years old. Scary as hell. Some even looked like they were enjoying it!.

Many, many bored expats in that little town. To some, this is the highlight to their week.

Actually, it's a fund raiser. They do this one day every week. People come, play, and the proceeds go to a local charity. I have never gone, but I know people, retirees, who do. And, actually, I see nothing wrong with it. It is no more a diversion than going to the beach or playing cards, or going to a movie.

If I didn't dislike that place I would be playing bingo every week!!!

Not to offend the loyal--because one man's ceiling is another man's floor and I get that---but I can't stand the Jolly Roger. They violate the noise code consistently and from other restaurant owner friends along the strip, they are apparently not really good neighbors.

I've never seen it in the DR, but I'd expect it to be popular. Dominicans love to gamble and it's common enough in Catholic churches.

Subsequent to that, the owners lack Customer service skills, they primarily cater to their buddies, everyone else, just hand over your cash...

Sad to hear bad press on the place. A good restaurant owner can be a great concierge and make the difference in tourists coming back to town. If you limit good service to your regs, the business can only go down.
