VC coming up. The DR you say possibility. Not! How anyone says they feel safe in the DR is ridiculous. Coming up with excuses for robbery and murder. Putting the blame on the victim. Please stop. It is what it is.

Feeling safe and being safe are not the same.

put this response where you want

By my experience, recently, many locals are feeling the pinch about the cost of surviving (vs living).
The US$$ is hurting them, chicken has skyrocketed in price ( for one)

it doesn't bode well ... desperation is a feeling many of don't know.

I'm not condoning crime but perhaps giving an explanation... as I see & hear life's problems in the campo

I have to admit that in my few years of living here things have changed just recently, and not really for the better.
I have strolled, ridden and driven the Malecon in POP many times, in fact just a few days ago to check out the new park and never actually felt particularly unsafe, other than the usual homicidal motoconchos, but now I'm really not so sure.
To kill a guy, tourist,no less, for a simple robbery does not seem to be DR style but it's really disturbing.I never wear bling or look rich when I'm out and about but this has shaken me quite a lot.
It's fine for Virgil to defend the Republic as in ancient times, but something is rotten in the state for sure, and I'm not convinced that the law enforcement agencies can stem it!

Catching the perps is a secondary duty for forces of order.Security and prevention should be the goal and it looks like that has fallen by the wayside to shaking down the hookers, drivers and wanna-be business operators.Tourist protection is one of those knee-jerk ineffectual visual "improvements" obviously.
Easy meat.

I was in my most disliked town in DR, Santo Domingo, and had a few hours to kill so considered a jolly walk along their Malecon ,only to be advised against it by no less than two separate local taxi drivers and the waiter from the cafe!

Something is swinging around here, and it doesn't seem to be beneficial to anyone:not even the crooks..
It does require a strong hand, but where to place it? Where will the priorities be?

Wearing jewelry, especially gold jewelry is just stupid.

yes we know that but many people new to here do not consider a gold necklace very valuable they wear it all the time and do not think it really worth stealing. To a thief a simple 100 usd necklace is much money. Heck they steal womens hair in this country. same MO. they need to assign military patrols to end this crap

A few months back we noticed a MUCH increased police presence in Bella Vista. PN, Ahmet, some higher ranking guys running the show. Apparently lots of muggings of bella vista mall employees as they walk up to catch publicos on romulo.
Also heard that Danilo was changing his route and passing by. It was great while it lasted. When the dip****s that stand on their horns because of a line getting into Body Shop ahmet would tell them to shut up or get a ticket. There were PN walking around the neighborhood and spread out a bit.

Now? There will be 3-4 guys all together talking crap on the corner of the mall. Nobody gets robbed there. They get robbed a few blocks away. Most recently the 3-4 cops are sitting in the colmado watching the game.
One time, we were walking to get ice cream and the dip****s were honking like crazy because of the tapon at body shop. Now we corss the street and there is a yipeta stopped while the driver is chuleando with a not very attractive female cop. Literally nobody could enter the street from sarasota and there was a huge traffic back up. They couldn't give a crap, chatting away. I took out my cell and recorded them. The driver started yelling at me saying I was a bad example for my nephews. I said you are a bad example of a human. You don't give a crap about anyone, and if you want to hit on her, send her a friggin whatsapp. . . .

You would do a favor to society if you shared the video for everyone to see and make it go viral. I will definitely share in on my social networks and have all my friends share it. We shouldn't let **** like this fly.

Our decision to move back to the United States of America is validated every time I log onto these forums. My family complains nonstop about the violence, disorder, moral bankruptcy and lack of infrastructure and other aspects of our failed state. I don't take them too serious because complaining and whining is a Dominican pastime, but when I hear of this savagery for myself it hits home.

I sometimes second guess our decision to give up the maid, country club and and beach weekends but then I think of the danger that we lived in. I thank God every day for allowing us to make a soft landing far from this putrid, fetid Island.

Puerto Plata will lose the cruise ships in 2 years ... the entire city will resemble Cap-Haitien in 5

This happned some time ago but it shows how crime is evolving here. A pilot for Lufstansa and his wife were taking a morning walk on Av Bulivar. passing by what was then an amusement park. Two men on a passola pull up behind them and shoot both of them in the back. they then comly get off and park the passola and go thru the clothing of the wounded for cash and whatever is on them. The pilot died his wife was flown back to germany in critical condition. Thats what you get for taking a Morning walk in Santo Domingo !

Some people wallow in their fear.
