What is called a sabre in English is called a sable in Spanish. Another English word for it is cutlass.
Sabre by land and cutlass by sea, as a rule.

The Russian sable (the furry black animal) is also called a sable.
These have nasty tempers, but make poor weapons, so there is little confusion.

If you whack some with a sable, it is a sablazo.
If you whack them with a machete, that would be a machetazo.

I imagine more Caribbean wars were fought with machetes than with sabres.

machetazo is one of my favourite words.

i agree, machete or colin would be a better fit.

Actually, the sabre and the cutlass are two different weapons.

My first time in Santo Domingo as we passed that statue I asked the taxi driver who it was. He looked at it and said "John Efe Kennedy".

:p

It would have long been sold for scrap by ones who have no clue nor care what it is. Remember people here steal the electrical wires and wonder why they have no electricity.

It may be the first country of the new world but the education of the _____ world

reminds of neptune statue stolen from one of the tiny islands off the malecon in POP. it went missing overnight and was later recovered cut into small chunks in some scrap yard. they put it back together only to find out that the chopper from local air base could not lift it up...
