Hi, I'm traveling to the DR for the first time. I'm bringing 10,000 in DOP pesos in 50 peso notes. Is this a bad idea? Should I try to change them into 100's? Will it attract suspicion from customs if I leave it in 50's?

10,000DOP is well below the limit where you have to declare. I would say though that 200 notes would be quite bulky and could possibly attract unwanted attention. I would change at least part of them into larger bills, more convenient also to make purchases instead of pulling out what someone could assume is a fortune.

Not that bulky. 200 notes is four bundles. I see Dominicans handle that much most times that I go to bank.

It will easily fit in a banker's deposit pouch. I find 100s the most convenient, 500s good for weekly shopping and 1000 and 2000 peso notes a hassle bc they check for counterfeits.

1000 peso note goes fast and as Kate said it might attack the wrong attention if it looks like you have a big roll of money. I'd take half in 1000 notes, 500 notes and few in 50 for small stuff. Where are you going? Resort or rental apartment?

I wish it was a rental apartment. Hotel.

Would it be easy for me to go into a bank and change my 50 peso notes into 100's?

Unless you are worried that they may be counerfeit why worry if they do check? To me the hassle is that nobody even restaurants that have lines out the door can or will change them. Gas stations are the only place one can count on whipping out a 2000 peso note and feel confidant it won't cause a problem.

Have you already exchanged the money? If not, I'd seriously consider getting a few 1k notes, and the balance being 500p. 50 pesos is a little more than a dollar, and won't get you very far at all.

50 peso notes are not readily available. Frequently the bank or the Cambio have none and stores and restaurants have none. I would hang on to them as they are great for tips and other small tranactions.

Are we actually having a debate over $219?
You could spend that in Dufry on booze and snacks.

Not wise to flash money in this country in front of anyone. Be smart. Stay safe.

Flash !!!You flash 220 U.S or pesos in Santiago, Sosua, Cabarete you might catch the attention of the maid or windshield washer at the intersection.

Singles are only coins. I had a five peso note from a friend's earlier trip when I first arrove. Gave it away to a kid. Maybe should have kept it as a collector's item.

The 5 peso note has been out of circulation since 1961 Pinocchio.

I still have some one peso notes from Mexico. I have no idea how old they are, but a lot older than 1961 for sure. I had no idea when I first came here whether the 5 peso note was valid or not, but the old guy who gave it to me hadn't been here for a long time.
