This must be the largest hypermarket in the Caribbean with a roof full of solar panels.

Two representatives (one Spaniard and the other -the mixed guy- French possibly from Martinique) give details of how solar panels work, costs, return on investments; blah, blah... in Spanish, of course.

The actual interview starts at 8:00 on the timeline. You can click on that minute in the timeline to skip right to the juicy stuff. lol

It's a private company and they invested US$2 million on this, so maybe the panels will last. Also the high cost of the EDE's electricity is an extra incentive to take care of the panels.

Most Banco Popular stand alone branches have roofs full of working solar panels and that has been the case for quite a few years now. If they can do it, I don't see why Carrefour can't.

Solar panels installed by the government are another story and if you want a good example, look what happened to the solar powered light fixtures on the Mauricio B?ez bridge near San Pedro de Macor?s. Yes, the issue there wasn't a lack of maintenance per se, but...

Banco Popular and Supermercado Nacional have them here in Punta Cana Village, much much smaller than Carrefour though.

Yesterday's DR1 News covered the story:
Solar power plant at Carrefour Santo Domingo
The Santo Domingo branch of French hypermarket chain Carrefour has inaugurated a rooftop solar energy plant that cost more than US$2 million. The panels will supply much of the store's energy needs. Carrefour general director Olivier Pellin said the system was installed by Solar Electric and has 4,744 panels with a 1.25 MW generation capacity on the 14,000-square meter roof of the building at Km 10.5 of Duarte Highway. Pellin said it was the largest solar roof in the country and described it as Carrefour's contribution to the environment. He said the company has changed all its lighting to Led and installed high efficiency air-conditioning. Solar Electric general manager David Doumith estimated that Carrefour would now make savings of 30% on its power bill. According to estimates, Carrefour will recoup its investment in seven years, with a 25-year lifespan for the plant.
Jean Alain Rodriguez of the Center for Export and Investment (CEI-RD) represented the Dominican government at the event.
