Crisis continues in the health sector
The Dominican Medical Association (CMD) has accused the government of “lying to the country” about the crisis in the nation’s hospitals and said that those government officials taking part in the negotiations with the union have summarily called off the talks.
Dr. Waldo Ariel Sero, president of the CMD, said that the government officials had no interest in following through on their promises, saying there is not enough money available for the pay increase demanded by the CMD. Suero warned that the CMD would again carry their protests to the streets and into the hospitals if the government did not meet their demands for a pay increase for doctors, nurses and other health professionals.

Sanchez in mourning
On Monday 11 July 2016, the entire town of Sanchez shut down, including shops, supermarkets and bars, to mourn the 18 people who died in when two trucks collided on the Nagua-Sanchez road on the evening of Saturday, 9 July.
Although all of the businesses were closed, the streets were full of people in mourning as it seemed that everyone in the town knew at least one of the victims.
In the accident, two pastors died and there were families who lost up to four members. The cemetery in Sanchez did not have enough space, meaning that some bodies were buried in the same grave.
According to witnesses and an AMET report, the accident occurred as the tractor trailer traveling at high speed, crossed into the opposite lane and struck the truck full of the people returning from church services.
AMET spokesman, Diego Pesqueria, said the driver of the tractor trailer, Ronald Liriano, who is currently recovering from his injuries at a hospital in San Francisco de Macoris, will be charged with vehicular homicide when he is released.

Traffic accidents: 548 deaths in three months
It is urgent that the authorities get to the root of the problem with traffic accidents in the Dominican Republic. The Saturday, 9 July 2016 clash of two trucks on the Nagua-Sanchez road added 18 more deaths to this year’s first quarter toll of 548 deaths, according to the Safety Observatory. The Observatory says that the two main reasons are imprudence of the drivers and the lack of conditions of the vehicles. In the case of the most recent deaths the tractor truck driver’s vehicle had tires that were well beyond their useful period. The clash was with a truck that also violated traffic regulations when transporting people in the back of the cargo truck. In addition to the 18 dead, 13 other persons are injured, several with serious injuries.
In 2015, there were 1,946 deaths for traffic accidents.
