Have noted that some smaller specialty shops in DR, for example ladies clothing boutiques, price their merchandise in US$ not DR$. Why? What are advantages/disadvantages?

This is not the norm. To tell you the truth, have not come across this situation myself in Santo Domingo with a clothing store, at least. Though I visited recently a furniture store with foreign furniture priced in US$.

Saw it in dress shop at Altos Chavon. Most merchandise was of U.S. origin. Might this pricing strategy help maintain level of inventory replacement cost better than having to adjust DR$ pricing in view of weakening strength of Peso vs. dollar?

Unless the Dominican laws have recently changed, it is against the law to price in any currency other than pesos. Dominicans are still complaining about the government collecting the airport exit tax in dollars, stating that it is illegal. Perhaps DR1 legal adviser could answer.

US prices

Did you ask the store salesperson for the price? If you didn't and you just assumed that it was posted in dollars, could it be perhaps that the U.S. price sticker of the merchandise was still left in the garment? Many stores that import from warehouse sales bring the garments to their stores with the last store price ticket and leave it there, but it may not be that store price.
