Saludos,

We are a family of three from the United States (Denver, CO area)... myself and wife (both 40) and have an autistic teenage son (17) and our two small dogs. We are visiting the DR for the very first time.

We arrived in early July and are currently visiting and living in Puerto Plata. Come the end of August, we will be moving to a condo rental located in Bavaro/Punta Cana.

We are learning Spanish, but still not yet up to par in proficiency. However, we still have manged to function and get by the best we can when interacting with the locals.

Everyone in the DR we have had the pleasure in dealing with have been very friendly and welcoming. The landscape is beautiful and the weather has been great. We are very excited to be here and want to experience as much as we can of the surroundings and culture as possible.

We will be posting our questions as they come up here on the DR1 forums and hope to make some new friends in the process as well!

Why DR ? Many better places in the world

Are you here, if so, why? DR is easy to get to with a few different airports, it's an American friendly place, no wars or revolutions, relatively cheap, and it's a big island with good weather.

Welcome! Take time to explore the country. While on the north coast, be sure to drive all the way east -- after Cabarete head to Playa Rogelio, Playa Grande + Playa Preciosa, Laguna Dudu. In Sosua, take time to visit Las Mariposas and Dream Project community educational programs. Be sure to drop by the Castillo Mundo King in Sosua.

Plan on spending at least a week exploring Samana, further to the east. Book hotels in Samana city, Las Galeras and Las Terrenas.

See here some online guides:

Most is current, but the Taino Park is closed.
