Hi, we are going to DR in December. Some of us are trying to get pregnant and we are wondering if there is any zikavirus concern, mainly in the northern part (we are staying mostly in cabarete), but are also travelling to the interior, South and west. So if there are some or all areas wherected it is a concern, we would like to know.

consider a ski holiday.

the 'safe' southern locales are disappearing quickly.....
if you pay attention to such things

normally i'd say not to worry about it but if you are planning pregnancy or trying to get prego i suggest you do not travel to DR at all. zika is not a particularly troublesome disease, few days of mild pain/fever/rash but risking having a child with microcephaly? not worth it.

There are many reasons to stay in the US for your vacations but this is one of the main ones. You and future generations will be happy that you made a wise prudent decision.

You already said you ARE going in December. Your group will have to plan how to avoid mosquitoes and Zika.
Whoever is trying to get pregnant could wait until after the trip? Google ways to avoid Zika?
Use bug spray!

My wife and I found out we were pregnant while in the DR. When we got home and the doctors found they made a HUGE deal about. They now considered her a high risk pregnancy. From there they scared the hell out of us saying the saw holes in heart and brain thinking it was zika. After scaring the **** out of us and numerous trips to specialist thank god everything is fine. She still has to go to double the amount of ultrasounds because of it. Not worth the trip IMHO.

Yes, we are going. I was asking to see if it was necessary to wait or not. I read a couple of times there was no zikavirus in dr, but wanted to be sure.

The general answer to your question is that anywhere in the tropics, there is a chance of contracting some serious diseases. Vaccines and prophylaxis medications can mitigate the risks but not completely eliminate them. Some life choices necessitate a major reorganization of your life in the short and long term.

Starting or adding to a family is once such life choice. When your focus is on having a baby, you shouldn't be jetting off to risky destinations as a way of passing the time until you give birth. If your concern is a healthy pregnancy resulting in a healthy child, stay home for a year and do that. If your focus is on travel, then do that and when you are ready to stay home and have a child, then do that.

Often, many attempt to have their cake and eat it too which for some doesn't work out the way they envision. From Marlaria, Dengue, Tyhpoid fever, Cholera, Chcikengunya, Zika, parasitic infections and other issues, gallivanting around the third world is not really compatible with the safe choice of staying home and devoting oneself to having a healthy pregnancy and producing a healthy baby.

Some things are just out of an individual's control. You don't get to choose which mosquito bites you so the safe choice is to stay away from mosquitoes that could be carrying tropical diseases which means staying out of areas where these diseases are known to exist. The more you move around a country, the more exposure you subject yourself to. In the end it only takes one infected mosquito.

It's your decision.

For me getting pregnant or wanting to get pregnant is not a reason to stay home. The zikavirus is though, but going to DR is more important to me then trying to get pregnant right now, so I'll wait with that for a couple of months. Apart from the zikavirus I really don't see a reason to not go to dr when u r pregnant.

Looks like I wasted my time trying to be educational and helpful.

...I really don't see a reason to not go to dr when u r pregnant.

Because catching Malaria can kill your fetus is but one reason...

Catching Dengue can lead to premature births, fetal death and labour complications is another reason...

Alas you know better than everyone else. You're going to do what you want anyway, so carry on. Zika is not the worst disease you can catch here, it's just topical at the moment because it's in the news.

I appreciate all the info u r giving me. I do know there are other dangerous diseases, some of them spread by mosquitos. However except for malaria areas there is no advice against pregnant women going there.
Anyway, I am going to DR in December, but we are postponing trying to get pregnant until after we come back.

I don't understand why you're response is so irritated though.
