Pawa flies to Haiti and announces flights to Puerto Rico
Pawa airlines made its inaugural flight to Port-au-Prince’s Toussaint L’Ouverture International Airport from Santo Domingo’s Las Americas International last week. The flights are four times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

In Haiti, the inaugural flight was received by Haiti’s Minister of Tourism Guy Didier Hyppolite, who stated that the route opens the way for developing a multi-destination strategy and represented an important lever for consolidating Haiti’s tourism sector in the Caribbean. He expressed hope that travelers would begin booking trips that include stops in both Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Last week PAWA also announced the start of flights from Santo Domingo to San Juan, Puerto Rico starting with flights four times per week. The flights will be on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday starting 3 October 2016.

Speaking at a press conference, Pawa’s corporate affairs director Alexander Barrios announced that the new flights were part of the airline’s regional expansion plan. He also stressed the importance the route would have for cargo.

The Puerto Rico flight will enable travelers from and through Puerto Rico to connect via Santo Domingo to Curacao, St. Martin, Antigua, Aruba and Havana.

The company also has plans to begin routes to New York and Miami starting November 2016.


Delta announces new flight to Punta Cana
Subject to government approval, Delta Airlines will be adding Saturday non-stop flights between Boston Logan and Punta Cana starting 17 December 2016. The new flight is being introduced in time for the peak Christmas travel period. Delta will be using an Airbus 319 aircraft.


Davis Cup tennis in Santiago
Santiago’s Centro Espanol tennis courts are hosting the Davis Cup tournament this year. The matches, to be played by the Dominican Republic and Colombia, are scheduled for 16-18 September 2016.

The winner of the series (best of five games – four singles and one doubles match) will remain in Group I of the Americas for 2017, while the loser will play Barbados in October to define the team to remain in the elite continental group and the team that will drop to Group 2.

The Dominican team is headed by Victor Estrella Burgos.


Soft opening for InterContinental hotel in Santo Domingo
The 21-floor Hotel Real InterContinental Santo Domingo is opening to the general public on 1 September 2016. From that date the hotel is taking direct bookings for all services. Nevertheless, the reservations system will be taking bookings starting 1 October 2016.

The InterContinental is located on Av. Winston Churchill, short walking distance from the La Sirena, Acropolis and Blue Mall shopping centers, the JW Marriott Hotel, and many popular city restaurants.

The 227-room hotel has 21 floors and four additional underground parking levels with 229 parking spaces. It has eight meeting rooms with capacity for 750 and a 540m2 ballroom. The hotel is constructed on a 32,000m2 surface.

The new InterContinental seeks to cater to the local crowd with its “The Place to Be” space, the gourmet center with two restaurants and a bar lounge.

This is the second Real Hotels & Resorts venture in the Dominican Republic. The first was the Quality Inn located west of the Las Americas International Airport.

Under construction to the north of the hotel is the Roble Corporate Center, a tower with 14,000 m2 of office space. The office tower is expected to open in early 2017.

The hotel is owned by Grupo Real Hotels & Restaurants of El Salvador.

Life in Color coming to Sans Souci
Enjoy electronic music and lots of color during Life in Color: Kingdom paint party sponsored by Barcelo Gran Anejo at the Sans Souci port in Santo Domingo. Blasts of paint will mark the fun evening and organizers say that protective covering is needed for cellphones and other valuables. People are advised to take plastic bags to protect their car seats when driving home.

The Santo Domingo stop is part of the world tour of Life in Color: Kingdom 2016.

The promoters say: “Get ready to embrace your wild side with the largest and most paint-filled production the animal kingdom has ever seen.”
