Central Bank August statistics
The number of tourists visiting the Dominican Republic in August 2016 was up by a robust 7.8% with 502,320 non-resident travelers, reports the Central Bank. Non-resident foreigners represented 8.1% or 32,265 foreign travelers, while non-resident Dominican tourists were up by 6.1% or 4,249 additional travelers. The upward trend is attributed to the low unemployment rate in the United States at 4.9% and effective marketing strategies implemented by the Ministry of Tourism.

In the first eight months of the year (from January to August 2016) non-resident travel totaled 4,165,198, up 272,306 travelers compared to the same period in 2015.

The breakdown by source market of the non-resident visitors for the first eight months of the year was:

North America, which includes the US, Canada and Mexico (53.9%)
Europe (25.5%)
South America (14.2%)
Central America and the Caribbean (6.2%)
The rest of the world (0.2%)

Travel from the United States was up by 88,535 additional visitors, 13,044 from Canada and 3,110 visitors from Mexico, for an overall increase of 5%. Meanwhile, travel from Europe was up 6.8%, mainly due to increased travel from Russia (18,959), the United Kingdom (14,261), Germany (13,880) and Poland 8,360).

Punta Cana International Airport
The Punta Cana International Airport is still the leading airport in the Caribbean with 2,423,049 annual air arrivals.

This is up 7.1% compared to the same period in 2015. Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) accounted for 66.9% of non-resident travelers to the Dominican Republic during the period from January to August 2016.

Casita de Yeya to open in Punta Cana Village
The informal Dominican food restaurant that operated on the western side of the Coco Loco intersection in B?varo will be opening a second branch in Punta Cana Village in December 2016. Owner Eneida Mart?nez says that popular demand led her to move the original restaurant to new premises next door to Coco Bongo in Downtown Punta Cana.

Popular dishes include lobster in coconut sauce, stewed goat, fried fish Sos?a-style, and sancocho, the traditional Dominican stew. Dominican food is served in a setting designed to convey the ambience of eating in a traditional Dominican wooden house.

Wisin at Coco Bongo in Punta Cana
Puerto Rican reggaeton singer Wisin will be performing in Punta Cana this fall. He is booked for a Saturday, 22 October 2016 concert at Coco Bongo in Downtown Punta Cana.
