PAWA begins flights to Puerto Rico
Pawa is flying to the Munoz Mar?n International Airport (SJU) in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Flights depart from Las Americas International Airport (SDQ). The route is also served by Seaborne Airlines and Jetblue Airways. Pawa already flies to Port-au-Prince, Curacao, Sint Maarten, Antigua, Aruba and Havana.

Coffee Festival in Barahona
The annual Festicaf?: The Organic Coffee Festival takes place in Polo, Barahona on 28, 29 and 30 October 2016. Now in its 12th year, the festival brings together local farmers and musicians for a weekend celebrating culture in the southwestern province.

The event is held to promote organic coffee production. Tastings, sports events and eco-tours are also organized for the participants. Sociologist and musician Rold?n Marmol is the organizer.

This is an opportunity to enjoy a rich variety of traditional music styles, including atabales, salve, congo, sarandunga, guloya, gaga, chuineros, comarca and pri-pr?. There will also be shows by folk dance groups and merengue, salsa and urban music performers.

The excursions planned for this year include the Ruta Mata de Ma?z, the river basin of R?o Nizaito, Ruta Loma de la Hoz, Ruta del Caf?, Ruta al Maniel Viejo, Ruta al Polo Magn?tico, Ruta a Ca?a Brava and Cortico.

Baseball season starts 20 October
The Dominican Professional Winter Baseball League starts on 20 October 2016 with the Gigantes del Cibao and Aguilas Cibae?as playing at the Estadio Cibao in Santiago. The next day, the two Santo Domingo city teams, the Leones del Escogido and Tigres del Licey will play at the Estadio Quisqueya in Santo Domingo. The Aguilas will play the Gigantes again, but this time at the Juli?n Javier stadium in San Francisco de Macor?s. The Estrellas Orientales will match the Toros del Este at the Estadio Francisco Micheli in La Romana.*

Grammy Award winners coming for DR Jazz Festival
Grammy award-winning jazz performers Esperanza Spalding and Terri Lyne Carrington are coming for the 20th Dominican Republic Jazz Festival, the organizers announced last week.

The festival takes place from 8-12 November 2016 with free concerts at venues in Santo Domingo, Santiago and Puerto Plata city and Cabarete, Puerto Plata.

Spalding is a four-time Grammy Award winner. She is joined by three-time Grammy Award-winning drummer Terri Lyne Carrington.

Some of the other outstanding international performers booked for the event are saxophonist Patricia Zarate and her quintet, Joanne Brackeen (USA), Lihi Haruvi (Israel), Tia Fuller Quartet (USA), Geri Allen, Ingrid Jensen & Linda Oh (USA) as well as the Berklee Global Jazz Institute Ambassadors.

The opening concert takes place at 8pm on Tuesday, 8 November 2016 at the Plaza Espa?a with a performance by the Big Band from the Santo Domingo Music Conservatory featuring special guests and the Berklee Global Jazz Institute musicians with special guest jazz pianist Joanne Brackeen (USA).

While the event is free for general admission, VIP tickets are available with priority seating, complimentary beverages and other perks.

On Wednesday, 9 November, the performances take place at the Centro Le?n at 8pm with Lihi Haruvi (Israel) and Patricia Pereyra y su Banda – Tribute (DR).

On Thursday, 10 November, a concert in Puerto Plata at the Parque Independencia (Parque Central) at 8pm, with a performance by Sabrina Estepan (DR) and Tia Fuller Quartet (USA).

The two closing concerts are at the original stages for the event, Cabarete Beach, on Friday, 11 November with Enerolisa y su Grupo de Salve (DR) and the Berklee Global Jazz Institute Ambassadors and special guests Terri Lyne Carrington (USA) and Esperanza Spalding (USA). The closing concert will take place in Cabarete on Saturday, 12 November at 8pm with Patricia Zarate Quintet (Chile), and a special quartet featuring Geri Allen, Terri Lyne Carrington, Ingrid Jensen & Linda Oh (USA).*
