Joel Santos to preside Asonahores 2016-2018
The National Hotel & Tourism Association (Asonahores) has elected Joel Santos Echevarr?a as president of the leading Dominican tourism organization for 2016-2018. He replaces Sim?n S?arez who was on the board for 26 years and will now serve as a member of the board of former presidents.

Joel Santos, an economist, was selected during the organization?s annual general meeting at the Hotel Embajador last week. At the time of his appointment he was serving as Asonahores treasurer and had been a member of its board of directors since 2012.

Santos is the executive vice president and founding partner of the Coral Hospitality Corporation that manages hotels, condo hotels and tourist services under the brands of Coral Hotels, Xeliter and International Vacation Club.

Before joining the tourism sector, he held several posts in the BHD banking group over a period of 10 years, including five years as vice president of finance for Coral Hotels and Resorts, a hotel chain created by the group. Before that he worked at Citibank and for the Codetel and Tricom telecom companies. He took part in the only public shares placement by a Dominican company, that of Tricom on the New York Stock Exchange.

He is a Magna Cum Laude graduate in economics from the PUCMM. He has a MBA in international business from the American Graduate School of International Management (Thunderbird) in Arizona. Santos was a professor of economics and finance at the PUCMM for more than 10 years.

He has held several posts in national business associations and is currently the president of the Dominican Bosses Confederation (COPARDOM), vice president of the board of directors of the Dominican Stock Exchange (BVRD), treasurer of the Juan Dolio Hotels Association and second vice president of the Association of Non-Regulated Electricity Users.

Santos has also served as president of the National Association of Young Entrepreneurs (ANJE) and president of the Central Securities Deposit (CEVALDOM), and has represented employers at the National Social Security Council (CNSS).

Bally Systems for Hard Rock Casino
Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is installing state-of-the-art marketing technology at its Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana. It has purchased the Bally Systems casino management system from the Scientific Games firm.

The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana is 45,000 square feet in size and has more than 450 slot machines and 40 table games.

?After our positive experiences with Scientific Games at our Florida and Ohio properties, it was an easy decision to engage Scientific Games once again for Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana,? said Jon Lucas, Hard Rock International's executive vice president of operations, Hotels & Casinos.

Scientific Games will begin the systems conversion during the final quarter of this year.
The casino will be one of the first to use Scientific Games' next-generation on-device messaging technology solution, iVIEW 4, which displays ?dynamic? marketing animations and video with instant response through a multi-touch display on the gaming device.

Dominicana Moda at the Hotel Embajador
This year's Dominicana Moda, the country's leading Dominican fashion event, is taking place from 18-22 October again at the Hotel Embajador in Santo Domingo. Five runway shows a day are planned. Dominicana Moda is a platform for showcasing both established and emerging Dominican designers. The event includes a leading exhibition of beauty products that is open to the attending public.

This year the fashion show focuses once again on Dominican design as well as on Central American and Caribbean fashion. There will be guest runway shows with designers from Nicaragua, Honduras, Panama, Puerto Rico and Haiti. Runway shows require contributions of RD$1,000, RD$1,500 or RD$5,000.

Model Lineisy Montero is being honored for her fashion-modeling career.

Play ball in the Dominican Republic
The Dominican Winter Professional Baseball Championship opens on Thursday, 20 October 2016 with a match between the Aguilas Cibae?as and the Gigantes del Cibao.

Six teams compete during the regular season until 21 December: The Aguilas Cibae?as (Santiago), Gigantes del Cibao (San Francisco de Macor?s), Leones del Escogido (Santo Domingo), Tigres del Licey (Santo Domingo), Toros del Este (La Romana) and Estrellas Orientales (San Pedro de Macor?s).

The round robin semi-finals take place at the five ballparks nationwide from 27 December through 17 January 2017. The finals follow, starting on 19 January with the winner advancing to play the best teams from Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela in the Caribbean Series. This year the Caribbean Series will take place in Culiac?n, Mexico.

Tournament organizer the Dominican Baseball League (LIDOM) has announced that as of this year smoking is banned in public areas of Dominican ballparks. Specific smoking areas have been designated at the stadiums. The measure is applicable to the Quisqueya Juan Marichal stadium in Santo Domingo, the Tetelo Vargas in San Pedro de Macor?s, the Francisco Micheli in La Romana, the Cibao in Santiago and the Juli?n Javier in San Francisco de Macor?s.

Cirque du Soleil?s ?Ovo? in Santo Domingo
Deborah Colker from Rio de Janeiro, who choreographed the opening ceremony for the 2016 Olympic Games, is the writer and director of ?Ovo,? the Cirque Du Soleil show that will be performed at Santo Domingo?s Palacio de los Deportes from 27 to 30 October 2016.*

Ticket prices are RD$4,500, RD$3,500 and RD$1,500.

Ovo premiered in Montr?al in 2009. Colker says she was inspired by the world of insects. The idea for Ovo was not to be about the acts, or dancing, or insects, but about movement.
