PAWA ready to fly to Miami
PAWA Dominicana airline is starting flights from Miami, Florida to Santo Domingo on Wednesday, 16 November 2016.

PAWA Miami flights will leave from Miami (MIA) at 5:15 am and at 2:30 pm flights from and Las Americas International Airport (SDQ) will leave at 10am and 6:15 pm. PAWA will operate two flights per day, seven days a week.

Ramirez says that the airline chose to serve Miami because it is home to the second largest community of Dominicans with some 175,000 living in South Florida. PAWA says they expect to transport 116,000 passengers by the end of 2016. The Miami-Santo Domingo flight will be the first commercial flight by a Dominican carrier to the US in more than 20 years.

Gourmet food service is included in the fares. According to company president Luis Ramírez, “the hot food served on board will be a complete gourmet experience of typical Dominican fare prepared by well known Chef Tita of Travesías Restaurant in Santo Domingo. There is also an open bar serving Dominican rum and coffee.”

PAWA Dominicana is alreadly flying to Curacao, St. Martin, Antigua, Haiti, Aruba, Puerto Rico and Cuba from Las Americas International Airport.

Air Europa’s Dreamliner flies MAD-SDQ
President Danilo Medina was at the Las Americas International Airport with executives of Air Europa to welcome the first Boeing 787 Dreamliner to land in Santo Domingo with 209 passengers on board the inaugural flight on Wedneday, 26 October 2016.

Air Europa flight 089 from Madrid arrived at Las Americas International. The arriving passengers were welcomed by President Medina, Minister of Tourism Francisco Javier García, Minister of Foreign Relations Miguel Vargas and the director of Aerodom, Monika Infante Henríquez.

Juan Jose “Pepe” Hidalgo, president of the Grupo Globalia, owner of Air Europa, who came on the inaugural flight said that all passengers are guaranteed a unique experience on the airplane, which he described as the most modern in the market and preferred for long-haul flights.

President Medina and the high-ranking government delegation toured the aircraft.

The modern airplane has capacity for 306 passengers – 174 tourist class, 22 business class, and 10 crew.

Air Europa now has three Boeing 787s in operation of 22 that are on order through 2022.


Air Century adds flight to San Juan, Puerto Rico
As of 5 December 2016, Air Century will be offering scheduled flights to San Juan, Puerto Rico from the La Isabela (Joaquín Balaguer) International Airport (JBQ) in northern Santo Domingo. Air Century is mainly known for its small plane charter service. The flights to Puerto Rico will be on board a Saab 340B aircraft.

The charter airline also has regular flights to Haiti since March 2016. The airline hopes to add Aruba, Santiago de Cuba and St. Martin in the near future.

Santo Domingo Triathlon on Sunday, 13 November
With 400 triathletes, 100 duathlete and 300 5K runners registered, the Santo Domingo Triathlon is set for Sunday, 13 November 2016. The race takes competitors through the historic attractions of the Colonial City of Santo Domingo.

The race starts at 8am and ends at the Fortaleza Ozama on Las Damas Street. Now in its second year, the event is organized by AF Sports. The categories in the Santo Domingo triathlon are Super Sprint, Sprint, Olympic, 5K and duathlon races.

Dominican Triathlon Federation president Luis López said that the initiative seeks to promote the sport while promoting Santo Domingo’s main tourist attractions.

The organizers donate part of the registration fees to the St. Jude Foundation that works with child cancer patients. For the occasion, the Foundation will be selling T-shirts from their Jude Collection with designs by famous artists.
