On my recent trip I noticed many Venezuelans at Agorra Mall , owning businesses in Bavaro .. and generally also in Santo Domingo.

Is this common all around the country ?? or just certain areas ? Do they get work visas easily ?? What do the locals make of this ??

All over, especially after Chavez started confiscating & nationalizing businesses, and they brought their money.

A bunch in Dade County, also.

Store and business owners - that was the first wave (2013-2015). The current wave (2015-2016) is people who can afford to buy tickets but have no money to set up businesses in the DR. Most of them are illegally in the DR and are selling things in the street, especially food. A very large portion of them are university educated, but frequently without means to initiate and complete residency visa process before coming to the DR.

I've seen the influx over the last year. Didn't notice it at first, but now you see more and more. Yes, from the business owners to the people selling goods on the streets. The restaurants, colmados, I frequent have more Venezuelan workers.

I wonder how long before the government says or does something. Not my country but just observing.

One sad aspect I noticed, Venezuelans are thought as being more educated and trust worthy. *I was hanging with a friend who has a property in Villa Mella. The top floor is being re-done and there is a Venezuelan squatting in the unit. We dropped off some things for the unit. ( I'm out of shape, uff) I asked my friend are you comfortable leaving these things in an unsecured apartment with a squatter there. They replied, "If it was a Dominican no, but he's Venezuelan."*

There is a cafe / restaurant run by a Venezuelan in Sosua in la bomba. Haven't seen many others around though - do they have a specific accent or catch phrase etc. that can give them away ... !?
