DR economy moves to the beat of tourism
National Hotel & Tourism Association (Asonahores) president Joel Santos says that the Dominican economy today depends on the tourism industry. Describing tourism as the country?s leading industry, he said that it affects almost all economic sectors, including production, commerce or services.

Santos was speaking at an event organized last week to present the new board of directors of Asonahores for 2016-2018.

He stressed that the Dominican tourism industry successfully competes with all warm weather leisure destinations and is a leader in Latin America and the Caribbean.

BA to increase flights
British airline British Airways (BA) has announced that it will be flying between Gatwick and Punta Cana from March 2017, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays using a 275-seater plane. Dominican Ministry of Tourism Marketing advisor Magaly Toribio announced that British Airways would be operating four weekly flights from July-September 2017 during the high season for European travelers.

Toribio points out that the additional flights will mean an increase in British visitors who are at a record 138,842 for the first 10 months of this year. Arrivals from January to October 2016 were 19,500 more than for the same period last year.

Thomson to base cruise ship in La Romana
Thomson Cruises has announced that La Romana will be the home port for three of its cruise ships in the Caribbean in 2017, including its newest vessels TUI Discovery and TUI Discovery 2.

Thomson Celebration will be moving to its new homeport of La Romana in November 2017.

The managing director of Thomson Cruises Richard Sofer said: "We are really excited about the introduction of the Dominican Republic as Thomson Celebration?s base for next winter. This is the first time we?ll have had three ships in the Caribbean and that means we can continue to offer more choice and flexibility to our customers, who we know are looking more and more for holidays further afield."
