400,000+ cruise ship passengers visit Puerto Plata
Deputy Minister of Tourism for Puerto Plata Julio Almonte reports that 121 cruise ships docked at the Amber Cove terminal in Puerto Plata in 2016. A total of 470,902 travelers are reported to have visited, including 346,968 passengers and 123,935 crew members. This is despite the prolonged torrential rainfall that affected the north coast in October, November and early December.

A record 20 cruise ships docked in December 2016, according to statistics from Carnival Corporation, owner of the Amber Cove terminal.

Almonte forecasts that a new record of 160 ships will be set for 2017.

Santo Domingo’s Colonial City is looking good
It has been a long three-and-a-half years of the US$45 million Inter-American Development Bank and Dominican government renovation program, but the results are beginning to show. Small hotels, bars, restaurants and shops are following in its wake. Program director Maribel Villalona reports that as part of the initiative, 200 old structures have been renovated and 800 given facelifts with painting. She says the program has concentrated on streets and public spaces and has prioritized pedestrians.

She said that 90% of electricity and telephone cables have already been installed underground and the potable water service has also been improved. As part of the program, tourist guides, taxi drivers and small vendors along Calle El Conde and businesses have been given guidance on how to provide better services to generate more business.

Villalona said the program is now in its final year. In 2017, priorities are to open the Museo de las Atarazanas Reales (with a collection of underwater treasures), continue training programs and local entertainment programs such as live jazz concerts, consolidate the camera surveillance security program, complete the installation of 1,300 LED lighting units, and open a community center.

The Ministry of Tourism has already announced the start of a second program, this time with a budget of US$90 million, also in coordination with the Inter-American Development Bank.

baseball games

We would like to go to the baseball game in San Francisco de Macoris on January 17. * Wondering if anyone has information about availability for tickets and how to get them.

For sure at the stadium.

The Aguilas are looking good to make the playoffs. The San Francisco de Macoris home team, Gigantes del Cibao, could make the playoffs which would mean tickets would be hard to get. *

If they are not fighting for the right to play in the finals, there should not be a major problem in getting tickets if you go early to the stadium in San Francisco de Macoris.*

I don't see on the lidom.com website any mention of buying tickets online.*
