Good day,

My husband and I were recently on a family vacation in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. We are both animal lovers and took this opportunity to contact local rescue organizations to see if we could escort some animals in need back to Washington DC where we live.

That is how we met Ana Martin. Ana and her husband Luis are a wonderful couple from Spain living currently in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. They’ve opened their hearts and home to the street dogs living in harsh conditions, rescuing and nurturing them back to health. They have now at their home 25 rescued animals. Ana and Luis need to return to their homeland in Spain but they refuse to leave until they find homes for each of these dogs.

A Facebook page has been created to help them with the adoption to Canada and the United States. They are all fixed and up to date with vaccinations and each have amazing character :)

2 dogs, Luna and Romeo have been adopted by a family in Vancouver. The cost of being an escort is free of charge, just your good heart. The family who adopted Luna and Romeo will be waiting for you and her at the airport.

I can give you the names and contact information of several families in Vancouver who have adopted 4 dogs from Ana and her husband.

If you can help out I would be eternally grateful.

Thank you,

Chantal Briere

Sorry to say, I don't think you will get many who are willing to help you. In addition, why would you bring dogs to North America when there are many there in Canada or the U.S. who are waiting for a home? It sounds like a wonderful idea but the execution just doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Almost every country has the same problem with unwanted or abandoned animals. Your friend would have more lot trying to find homes in the DR than the complicated process which you described.

Ana, Rescatame and Collares Rojos regularly ship dogs up to Canada and the US. Sometimes they're shipped to their new owners, other times to adoption groups. Puppies, adults, tripods, all mainly street dogs that have never had a home. Plenty of people out there willing to help, probably more would help if they knew more about all this.

Who covers the cost of the animal transportation and medical bills/customs paperwork? This sounds like a fantastic idea on the surface, but I like to know about on-going funding for these sort of things.

The entity or persons receiving the dog covers all expenses. The volunteers simply accompany them.
