An Apostille is a certificate issued by a designated authority in a country where the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement for Legalization of Foreign Public Documents, Apostille Convention, is in force. See a model Apostille. Apostilles authenticate the seals and signatures of officials on public documents such as birth certificates, notarials, court orders, or any other document issued by a public authority, so that they can be recognized in foreign countries that are parties to the Convention. In the United States, there are multiple designated Competent Authorities to issue Apostilles, the authority to issue an Apostille for a particular document depends on the origin of the document in question. Federal executive branch documents, such as FBI background checks, are authenticated by the federal Competent Authority, the U.S. Department of State Authentications Office. State documents such as notarizations or vital records are authenticated by designated state competent authorities, usually the state Secretary of State.

I am applying for residencia papers ...and my lawyer recommending submitting leases for properties that I have ...in order to show income....two of my properties are in Ireland ....so they would not be issued by a government agency ...they are just leases showing the rent paid ect
so does this change whether it should be notarized?
thanks for info

You lawyer should know. They do not need to be apostilled, as they are not issued by the state, but they may need to be notarized. There is nothing in the online requirements re notarization of foreign leases but there is about Dominican ones.

Documents showing the Financial Solvency
Examples: Letter of banks, Letter of Employment, titles of property
If a document is issued in the Dominican Republic, it must be certified by a notary public and legalized by the Attorney General’s Office (Procurdoría General de la República).

Please ensure you are using a specialist immigration attorney - there have been several issues recently of people being denied residency visas because their attorney did not have the requisite knowledge to complete the paperwork properly nor provide the paperwork needed.

An apostille certifies that a state issued document is authentic. It is attached to the document in question and may or may not have an embossed seal. It can only be done by the government that issued the document. It can be done through a service for fees up to around $100.

A notary can be done by anyone with a seal: bankers, lawyers and notaries. It is typically used to verify that one or more signatures have bern verified with adaquait ID. These can often be done for free.

You chose one of the best law firms in the DR. Guzmán-Ariza is a great law firm. I used them to obtain Dominican Citizenship. They're trustworthy and they know what they're doing.

To add a bit of information. To be a notary in the DR, you must first be a lawyer. Very different than in the USA.

I don't deny they are trustworthy, but I was less than impressed with the assistance I got from them in the great dog bite fight at the Fiscaleria in Sosua. (Here it comes.....)
