Based on published facts, does anyone have any published information or facts concerning the $$'s spent in Sosua and where those $$'s come from - tourism? types of tourists? Maybe someone from the Ahnvee project has some data considering that they must have done some research to justify the investment... or perhaps someone with ties to Ayunamiento?

Not looking for speculation - because everyone can do that - but information based on actual published research.

Just speculation on my part.

If someone says the "hookers".

When I was there a few weeks ago, some of the "hookers" were from other towns so their monies were being spend else where NOT Sosua.

Maybe the taxi's and moto's but that is it............... IMHO

Good thread idea. Yes mine is in fact speculation. Educated and informed but nevertheless speculative. Having said that, if the chicas and mongers stop coming to Sosua overnight would the restaurants, stores, salons, chica clothing and accessories businesses, bars, moto taxi's, food joints that cater to the support staff still be viable ?

You knew the answer when you asked cj.
Tourism or rather sex tourism is the fuel of the Sosua economy.

The mongers will spend the monies in the restaurants, casinos, "puta" bars.

The ones making the most cash, "hookers" are spending that cash outside of Sosua if they are from other towns. Just as an FYI

Actually, the primary driver of the Sosua economy is me, Meemselle. I never eat at home, I drink a lot, I take lots of conchos, I take my dog to the vet, I go to the hospital all the time, I spend lots of money at Playero, I have YUUUUUUGE phone bills, and I go to the salon weekly. The only thing that may take me off the Top Ten list is that I recently quit smoking.

There's your answer.

If all you are interested in is money, then you don't know the heart of the real Dominican people. Anyone influenced by the gringo economy has been corrupted by the true values (and beauty) of the Dominican people.

I just wrote a FaceBook piece about friendship and the loyalty and hearts of Dominicans.

Sorry to say, the longer I am in Sosua, the more I enjoy the campo.

Actually I disagree and dont think sex tourism is what fuels the Sosua economy. I started the thread to keep the Businesses Closed in Sosua thread on topic and was hoping maybe we could get some facts on the topic. NY_Commander - are you aware of any research? Pichardo? Anyone with facts? Maybe people here can start posting how long they stay, what type of tourist they are, what they spend and on what? Lets get to the bottom of this because everything until now has been pure speculation based on where/who people are exposed to - me included.

Depends what you are looking for. Not sure that many on vacay are that interested in the culture. I agree with you though that Dominicans are beautiful people. I remember being 20 years old with a piece of crap pasola - didnt matter where I broke down - someone always helped. I didnt have much $$ then but always had friends families of meager means inviting me to eat - now 17 & 18 year friendships that I chersih to this day.

You can narrow it down yourself; what is there to do in Sosua that will cause someone to spend more than 1 months' ($300) wages? Are there nice resorts or crappy hourly hotels? Are there people hawking anything along the beaches besides drugs?

A few days field-research and you'll get a handle on what the choices are. From there it's guesstimating how the pie-chart is divvied-up.

Although I have not been there for a while (2008), Sosua had nice logistical purposes. I wish I had been there earlier, as in late 80's/early 90's, but unfortunately I wasn't. To the angst of some here, Sosua WOULD survive without the mongers. Yes, why? Because they always have. I believe the small sleepy town that nobody knows about is a lot more attractive to worldwide visitors than a place with AI's or 5 Star resorts. I can tell you this, and yes from my perspective, I have not been back in 9 years because of the dealings going on there. Not just my words, but all Dominicans I know living abroad always told me, "Don't tell anybody you've been to Sosua, or are going there....tell them you're going to Puerto Plata." Dominicans know. But then again, I've already p***ed off the long-term residents, so maybe it's time to p*ss off the 72 hour pirates. For those that say it can't survive without the pirates......it was there 30 years ago without them, as posters with experience have stated.

Which Sosua?

To some Sosua is no more than the Pedro Clisante puta bars and the beach shacks. To others Sosua is everything but that.

I am with you cjewell.............

I want to relive the Sosua that Meems and AlterEgo speak of from way back when. There are plenty of towns here in the DR that are similar, albeit 30 years later....BUT....I will not be recommending any of them because I don't want 72 hour pirates, AI's, 5 Star Resorts, and uffff.....JetBlue.....messing up my hangout spots. But if cjewell is available (15K per day), I have a bottle of Red waiting...wink-wink. LOL. Life is short, let's have fun.

Are we really going to rehash this again?

Of course. Sex sells. Always did, always will.

I know of no source to answer this question definitively.

The government would like Sosua (and Boca Chica) to stop giving the DR a bad reputation as a go to country for prostitutes.

Take a moto ride from Sosua abajo all the way down to Laguna Grand beach. Chicas and single gentleman out number family tourists 20 to one. ( Stop off at Elvis's)....I am sure some one will say ,"oh yea but what about all the single women from Manhattan and Aspen who vacation here". Pete Rose has a better chance of getting into the hall of fame before that ever happens.
