Me and a couple of friends are spending a night in Santiago prior to traveling to Cabarete. I stayed at Aloha Sol about 7 years ago and I thought it was a nice Hotel for $50/night. This time, I'm thinking about Matum but I wanted to get some advice from this forum first. Thanks.

I used to stay at Aloha Sol but it has changed with the casino and it won't be $50 now.
Matum should have pool open by now and only problem is on weekends, the disco can be Louuuud.
I prefer Matum (good breakfast) except Fri/Sat

There are several. Gran Almirante is the best. I use Matum now, good price and walk to the monument and the Cowboy bar and restaurant

Cool..........Gran Almirante is more than I'm trying to spend for a night and I like the location of Matum.

....Would recommend the Matum...pool was done a while back, stayed there many times.... yes the noise from the disco can be loud , but what room you stay in is all important... I always use room #224 very quite, everything works.........if you want to see some history ask to see the suite they rent for $450 a night, the hotel was built by Trujillo...,that suite was his residence when in he was in Santiago...you can sit in his chair in his office, and lay on his bed......if that bed could tell stories....and the best breakfast in town......Doc.........

Matum is OK as the rooms are big but a bit dark.
I prefer Hotel century plaza on Raphael Vidal. The breakfast is much better (the rooms are smaller) and the hotel has a very good restaurant.....try the angus churrasco....Its better than Mr Grilled (no restaurant at Matum as they make your breakfast in a makeshift outdoor kitchen. .

If you want just a nice clean room to sleep in, and people who work there you can trust
then walk down that same hill as Gran Almirante, to Los Jardines Hotel , by the park.. on the corner .
Small but nice, clean, with a small breakfast included ..for around 22- 2300 pesos a night ..it used to be 2Mil pesos but i think its 2300 now .. its perfect for one night or 2 in town .
they used to have a huge parking lot across the street for the rental car, but unfortunately its now been built into stores and what not .. Still a nice deal though.

Los Jardines Hotel still has parking. A few spots street level in front of the plaza (I think it is ok) and under the plaza is a parking garage. I used to get their corporate rate of 1900 but last time I stayed their it was 2200 with breakfast included.
I got great sleep there by getting an inside room, no light, no noise.
The only thing I didn't like is that they close the restaurant after breakfast until dinner which forced me to work in my room.
Anyway, now I have an apartment here in Santaigo.

The only thing good about Mr. Grilled IMHO is that they are open 24/7. The cesar salad with chicken at Tablon is 10 times better and cheaper, in fact if you haven't tried Tablon (next to Puerto del Sol across from Monumento) I highly suggest it.

.... They have a big kitchen in basement...what you saw out side the breakfast room was a area to keep the food warm until needed......

I've stayed a couple of times myself. Slept like a rock in one of the inside rooms. Worth the money.

Aloha sol is much better, you will pay about 2000 pesos if you tell them you have been there before, The casino has always been there it is on back side of street but people from casino cant get to hotel, Matum is more expensive and the showers are small little things that you can barely turn in. Go to Aloha sol.

Matum

Hotel was recommended to me by a Dominican friend. For some reason (which I forget) I was flying to US from Stgo instead of POP.

I stayed at Matum; the casino was of no interest to me, but I enjoyed the location---being able to walk to and choose from nice restaurants. The room was clean and comfortable. Unfortch, my flight was too early to take breakfast.

I liked it a lot, and in the price range/accessibility to airport: yep.

platino is the best option especially for just an overnighter they may be just a little over 50bucks for a bigger room or you can get one of those little small rooms for less than 50. Matum has its drawbacks and the casino is one of them. I've stayed there before and was not happy and I can't go into details here. I have never stayed at aloha sol and I've made attempts to stay at jardines and the parking is suspect and the hotel sells out fast.

Just got back from my trip to Santiago and Matum Hotel and Casino was fine. I did not know about all the history associated with the hotel when I booked but it definitely added character. I will definitely stay there when I return.
