Does anyone know if I can buy travel insurance that will cover me medically (hospital/doctor etc) if I get sick in the US on a trip from here? I don't have medical coverage there (other than the free part of medicare that covers part of a hospital stay). i'll only be there a week or two. I have coverage here but i'm sure it doesn't cover me there (although I'll check). Thanks!

Try booking your ticket and watch if it offers insurance...

comes up near the end at payment, but not too late to abort

If you are considering "trip medical insurance" you'll need to read the policy very carefully. There is usually a way to download it before you buy. Sometimes you have to send an email and ask for a copy. Lot's of ways for the insurer to get out of paying if you file a claim. Not least of which is your country of residence. Post claim underwriting is where you don't really find out if you are covered until after you file a claim and this encompasses most of the third party policies offered by airlines and travel companies.

The big insurers like Blue Cross and their ilk will agree to cover you before you file a claim but these companies are usually much pricier than the fly-by-night deny at all cost companies.

We've used IMG and have successfully used their services and been reimbursed without issue.

Welcome to the club... Me too.

Premiums have gone up recently so my wife has switched to Cigna for considerably less.
Me? ........I'm over the line (read hill) and cannot move .

A Cigna limitation is no US coverage except for emergencies....
Coverage elsewhere..........Canada, DR etc.

Actually, I find IMG prefers me not to use US health services too much.

Case in point , my new medication was $138.50 in Canada.
I priced it at CVS in the US........$401

IMG is good for people who are full time expats. For just taking a trip and getting coverage during that trip, I don't believe they have that option. I had them for several years until I just went with a Dominican insurer and only have insurance in the DR. Some Dominican insurers also offer world wide plans, but I have not looked into them. Once again they would be year round and not just trip specific travel insurance.

I believe some credit cards have some limited coverage if you book the flights through them.

I am interested in what is out that that is reasonable and works in such a situation.

They sell it here as it is compulsory for Cuba. Here is the email of Heydi Sanchez hsanchez@coalcava.com who has an office in the Colonial Zone and they sell travel insurance.

Windy,
IMG must have shorter term policies, they advertise themselves as serving those going on sabbatical , etc.
Temporary travel type insurance.

But yes, mine is full time in conjunction with my RD policy..... just in case !!

WW, you are correct about IMG and Trip insurance:

https://www.imglobal.com/travel-insurance
I just tried to get info using an on line chat with IMG. Not possible.
You have to call and provide very specific information.

With any coverage you ask about, pay particular
care to any questions about pre-existing conditions that they may not cover.

For example, do they use hyper-tension as an excuse not to cover stroke, heart attack, etc. The expat IMG plan I dropped was not particularly useful to me because they had such a pre-existing conditions clause.

I thought so... just too lazy to search it.

Re: IMG
Y'day, I signed up (finally after many years) for their online services.....
File claims, get certification for procedures, renew.... an excellent website .

Also, they have a concierge service -
When you need a procedure, call in and they hunt for a specialist in your area.
They do everything (including negotiating their price from the doctor).
Really a nice service, b/c the precertification must come as part of the package

Especially handy when you're strange territory !!

Yes we have used it for a number of years. We have been lucky and never had to use it. It is separate insurance from our medical insurance in the DR, who is with Humano.

Windy , Pre-existing

I got hit with that one...
They saw 2 pre-basal cell removals on my face and disallowed any skin conditions.

Then comes my melanoma - a pre-existing skin condition , they said.

SOL for treatment......and RD doesn't have the drugs.......
$$$ for me

From World Nomads site:

What is your age limit?

If you're under 66 years of age at the time this policy starts, we can cover you on your adventure. If you are between 67 and 70 years old, you can buy a policy direct from our insurer Bupa Global Travel.

Thanks, Windeguy! I'll follow up. I missed that :)

Am I missing something here. You are travelling for a week or two and that worried about health insurance coverage. Is there somehthing you are not making clear here. If that is such a huge concern maybe you should re-consider travel out of the country.
