Marco Rubio is a Republican Senator (Florida) in the US Senate.

The representative of the DR in the OAS recently voted to abstain regarding a possible OAS intervention in Venezuela. Most countries voted in favor of intervening. Most of the countries that abstained or voted against are Caribbean countries (think PetroCaribe and it all makes sense.)

What could Rubio mean by 'impact relationship with US?'

Will the US impose sanctions on the DR, affecting trade?

Will the US make it harder for Americans to travel to the DR, affecting tourism?

Will the DR be put on a list of an 'axis of evil' type?

Does the DR get financial aid from the US? That could be an issue since it would come with strings attached.

Other than that, I would not worry much. There is currently the scrapping of Obamacare while the Russians are coming to keep Marco distracted.

does DR support maduro?
DR tends to be neutral in international politics. I like the fact the DR has no real declared enemies. Haiti is as close as it gets, and that relationship isn't *that* bad, just running hot and cold.

Not a fan of a Senator making a veiled threat to countries in public. Perhaps the US are smarting from the DR (Leonel) giving Zeyala refuge.

I suspect at worse the US would slow-walk aid.

I agree mostly. Fairly accurate analysis from what I have been able to read.

Both the PRD and PLD political parties have historical socialist beginnings and are membrs of socialist International. They weakly support the ideas behind socialist governance.

Actually it was a response to Bob's statements about the socialist origens of the political parties in the DR
Obamaphones have no bearing on the origins of political parties in the DR.

Bob's point, I suspect, was that because of some historical soft socialist leanings of DR political parties may create a soft spot for other socialists/Marxists. And he may be correct.

That has no connection to Obamaphones.

Its all about policies and the support thereof, if the DR, turns their back on Americas policy towards the government of Venezuela, is just naturally that something won't ring to the same tone to the USA.

Rest assure that calls and meetings have and will continue to happen among the DR and the Embassy with these regards at the forefront.

Easiest way to kill a good OP, tossing threats around. I for once failed to see anything that wasn't DR related on previous post?

a quick question here. several countries have taken disparate positions on this matter. moderate governments have taken a wait and see approach. more radical leaders, like Dr Gonsalves from St Vincent, have taken opposing stances. would it be a violation of forum rules to compare the DR approach with the approaches of the other governments?

from the link: http://www.miamiherald.com/news/politics-government/article158342954.html

In March, he said it would be difficult to protect the Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Haiti from possible cuts in U.S. foreign aid if they voted against Venezuelan sanctions at the Organization of American States.

“This is not a threat, but it is the reality,” Rubio said in March. “We have a very difficult situation in Washington, where massive cuts in foreign aid are under consideration. And it will be very difficult for us to justify assistance to those countries if they, at the end of the day, are countries that do not cooperate in the defense of democracy in the region.”

All three countries, who have voted against sanctioning Venezuela in the past, ended up voting against the measure again despite Rubio’s statements.

That is roughly how I feel about the man as well. He thinks the age of the earth is a great mystery. Any other words after that which he speaks are just "Blah, Blah, Blah" to me.

The PRD is a member of the Socialist International, but I'm not sure whether that mantle was inherited by the PRM.
The PLD also has socialist roots - in fact it was once part of the PRD - but as far as I know it has never been in the SI since it broke off from the PRD. Anyone familiar with DR politics will know that ideology in the left-right sense has long been completely irrelevant.

The government is wishy-washy on Venezuela because of the the PetroCaribe agreement.

The current US administratin is not DR friendly.  I hope current DR-US relations are not harmed and that cooperative efforts conyinue.  I fear what may happen.
