These murderers pick their victims carefully. The more infirm or elderly you are in this country the more cautious you should be. Sad ending.
Unfortunately the anti gun sentiment has taken hold here in a failed effort to end criminal gun violence. A few years ago I remember checking my pistol at the casino entrance. They used a metal detector wand and it was shocking to see how many young tigres were packing. No one checked permits but at the time I thought if you wanted to get guns off the street here was an easy way to catch people. As far as the gun law it should be free permits to everybody over 60. Just my thoughts. Just hate to see innocent defenseless people targeted by scum. Among my great ideas is a fool proof method stop to purse snatching. A grenade in the purse with a string tied to the pin.

Well you missed the whole point ..... they got stabbed to death!!! not shot! so now we should take away knives too from all people? It's not the gun that kills, it is not the knife or what ever kills...it is the person who kills the other person. RIP to the elderly couple who for sure suffered so much in their last moments of life.

Perhaps I was not clear. I support gun rights for people defending themselves. I was not typing about the way this poor couple died. Handguns themselves and permits in the DR are very expensive. Politicians have responded to a proliferation of illegal guns on the street by tightening laws on legal gun owners. This has no effect on reducing illegal guns in the hands of criminals. This couple might be alive today if they could have defended themselves.

PN thinks that the one of the two men responsible for this murder was a concierge in the building where the couple lived. so a person of trust, so to speak, someone who they knew.

well, that is about par for the course in the DR. when you get robbed, maimed, or killed, it is usually by someone with whom you have a relationship of trust. most jobs are inside jobs.

If you want to discuss guns and ownership policy, there's a specific thread in OT for that very thing. Let's please respect this thread, and focus on what happened to the victims.

This is not a good country for old foreigners. Seems like they are constantly
being taken advantage of in some way shape or form by the locals. Sadly
often resulting in death.

By all accounts they had been in the DR for many years and may not have stood out as foreign.

It is tragic when someone we trust betrays us in a way that harms us or gets us killed. However we are social creatures and I doubt anyone on this forum lives in RD without having Dominicans who we are either friends with or trusted workers. We all have different levels of ability to determine who we should be cautious about and those we can trust. We all need friends and trust our friends.

It's a little hard to defend yourself when a 20+ something young man is standing inside your condo directly in front of a 79 & 81 old couple. It wouldn't have mattered if they had a grenade launcher in the next room. What can you do when someone, who works in the building, is standing inside your condo--someone who possesses 3x times the speed, reflexes, and strength than you?

If it was my 79yrs old mother, he could have just blew on her and she would have fallen backwards. She can hardly walk, and most 79 & 81yrs olds can barely move as well. They would have absolutely no defense against a man in his 20's. None. Zero. Nothing! They wouldn't have any defense against me either...and i'm in my 50's.

So, the talk about them being armed with whatever is a moot point. If i was standing in front of them, i would not allow them to leave my sight and go get a gun, or raise a gun, or even think about running for a gun.

It would be the exact same thing if a 20+yrs old and his friend was standing in my condo, with the idea of robbing me. Do you really think they are going to let me walk into another room to retrieve a gun or weapon?

When people you know are already standing inside your house, condo, or whatever, its already too late. Way too late. They know why they are there, you don't! They're not going to let you go get a weapon, or use your phone, or scream, or do anything else. A 25yrs old man, and especially two men, now have complete control over you once they have gained entry and are standing in front of you. In that situation, its best to give them what they want, try and keep them calm, and just hope they don't have any other intentions other than just robbing you.

If they had a weapon, it would have simply have been stolen from them, and no amount of macho talk, Good, Bad, & ugly stand-offs, I know Judo, I was a great boxer, or blah, blah, blah is going to do anything against a man one third your age.
