OK I know Frank had once posted that his friend drove regularly to Punta Cana in 3 hours.

My family has been pestering me to go there before school starts here. But I am not up for a 7 hour drive. Can it actually be done in 4 - about the limit of my patience ? If so someone please post the route. And no I will be driving only a small Japanese car - not a crotch rocket of Hummer.

I'd like to see a 3 trip.....

Can't imagine it.

Quick review

Cabarete to Cabrera...an hour
Cabrera to autopista...an hour
Autopista to Las Americas Highway...an hour

Now you're within 15 minutes of the SDQ airport

Take it from there

More like 5, depending on how long does it take you to drive from Cabarete to the north end of the Samaná-Las Américas highway. It should take at least 3 hours from that point to PC.

Cabarete
Only if you do it in the middle of the night when there is no traffic and you do 90 mph all the way.

Careful, there are police on the toll road monitoring vehicle speed and they do pull people over for speeding.

The best I ever did it is 3 1/2 in the early morning, no traffic and lots of sunshine help, but a rented mustang was the key,,,,

I can state unequivocally that Cabrera to SDQ is 2 hours 10-15 minutes at a reasonable speed.

Take it from there.

that's the reason we only went to PC once. long ass drive, no matter how you cut it. and after that crazy rain season we had few months ago some stretches of the road are pretty bad. add to this occasional huelga somewhere and occasional road works before random danilo's trip and you are looking at 6-7 hour drive anyways (from PP). and traveling with kids mean frequent pit stops to pee/eat/drink.

The airport proper..... is 2 hrs 15 min... from Cabrera.

So 2 hrs more +/- from there and add the hour from Cabarete

5-5 1/2 hrs with good driving and good luck....+ stops

and almost completely off-topic . . . our first trip to the DR was in 1985. SDQ to Bavaro Beach (no such thing as Punta Cana then) was 3 hr 35 min . . . by bus, but there were a couple of coolers in the back--one with beer, one with rum and mix.

i declare this historical anecdote to be on topic :)

it's an interesting perspective how infrastructure changed. back in the 80's road infractructure must have been more limited but then there were also fewer vehicles.

Def...you should have free passage on a cruise ship by now.

My instructions take the driver to SDQ .. the airport...

Form there.... find your own way.... I never venture into the Great Beyond

Add the requisite time from the airport..... sabe???

You don't have to go back that far - that journey took 3 hrs 30 mins by car until about five years ago, depending on traffic in Higuey and La Otra Banda. Bus was more like 4 hours.

Punta Cana was already in existence in the mid-eighties. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puntacana_Resort_and_Club

I'll stand corrected. Wikipedia is not perfect but it has a pretty good track-record for errors, about the same as that of the Encyclopedia Brittanica I understand. But on the ground then in 1985, there was one hotel on the beach: Hotel Bavaro Beach and if there was an airport nearby we were certainly not made aware of it. In fact people remarked on the lack of air traffic--nice and peaceful someone said around about Wednesday.
