Government effort to register all public hospital births
At a ceremony presided over by President Danilo Medina, First Lady Candida Montilla and Vice President Margarita Cedeño, the Medina administration announced the signing of an agreement with the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) to ensure that all children born in Dominican health centers be registered at birth.

The agreement establishes commitments for the Central Electoral Board (JCE) to establish registration services in hospitals currently not being served and improve birth registration services at public hospitals currently in the program. The Ministry of Public Health has agreed to strengthen teenage pregnancy prevention programs. The Special Programs Agency of the Presidency will provide funding for equipping the offices (OEC), pay overtime to staff when necessary and offer training to the civil registry personnel. The National Health Service will train the staff responsible for filling out the prenatal forms to register pregnant teenagers. Unicef will provide technical support to the OECs’ staff and collaborators.

It is estimated that in the Dominican Republic, 12% of children under five years of age, or around 120,000 children, are not registered in the civil registry, according to data from the government and Unicef. While in most public hospitals there are civil registration offices, government statistics show that around 50% of the births are not registered. Most of these unregistered births are to teenage mothers. The new agreement seeks to considerably reduce these numbers.

In the Dominican Republic parents have a 60-day window to register babies at birth in urban areas and 90 days in rural areas. Afterwards, there is a lengthy procedure to be followed resulting in delays in registration until the parents are under pressure to do so once the child passes 6th grade.

Indotel: 4.5G network is but a marketing ploy
The president of the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel), José del Castillo Saviñón confirmed the revelation by IT technician Hiddekel Morrison that in the country there is no 4.5G Internet technology. Morrison made the statement after telecom Claro announced it was offering high speed data transmission to clients during a major company marketing event. Claro promoted itself as the only telecom company to offer its clients the fast speed 4.5G connections.

When Morrison called this false advertising, Claro defended its announcement, but later in press advertisements altered the advertising campaign to indicate that the faster service would be possible once the devices were available.

In a TV interview on Hoy Mismo on Color Vision, Del Castillo says the challenge is to make 5G service available to customers in the Dominican Republic, but this has not happened yet. He clarified: “The 4.5G, in a nutshell, is not an International Telecommunications Union (UIT) standard. There is 2, 3, 4, 5G. We are headed in the direction of 5G. That is the goal,” he said on the TV interview. He explained that the 4.5G network “or however you want to call it” does not exist and is a marketing term that means that a company is progressing to faster speeds.”

Del Castilloj said that it is Indotel’s role to ensure there not be false advertising. He said when a company markets a service, this service must be available to consumers so the public can decide the value of the service based on a reality.

Prescriptions for sexual stimulants
The Ministry of Public Health has announced that soon prescriptions will be required to purchase sexual stimulants. Public Health Minister, Altagracia Guzmán Marcelino justifies the need to restrict the sale given the present irrational use of sexual stimulants in combination with drugs and energy drinks that has lead to many deaths, especially of young men.

In the Dominican Republic Cialis, Viagra and others are sold without prescription.

For years, the Dominican Cardiology Society has warned of the significant increase in heart attacks in persons 14 to 30 years of age.

Andrés Martín, president of the Dominican Society of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery said that members are seeing an increasing number of stroke victims the result of the consumption of cocaine and sexual stimulants.

José Miguel Gómez, a past president of the Dominican Sexology Society, said many years back they had requested the Ministry of Public Health take control of the sexual stimulant sales.

Green marchers stopped from protesting
Yesterday, Monday, 7 August 2017, a protest march by members of the Green March Movement was impeded in the area of the Presidential Palace. The march had been named “The Seven Marches around Jericho” and had been planned for 7am. The protestors would walk seven times around the Presidential Palace.

Winston Paulino, member of the Green March Movement, said he did not know why they were prevented from marching as they had received permission for the protest since last Tuesday. He went on to say that a large police presence impeded the peaceful protest.

Paulino explained that each of the seven times the protesters would have paraded around the Presidential Palace to symbolize seven different targets for curtailing government corruption. The first was to protest the corruption at the State Sugar Council (CEA), the second against the corruption at the Office of Supervising Engineers of State Works (OISOE) and so on. But they were unable to carry out even one lap around the Presidential Palace due to the heavy military presence that stopped the protesters.

Paulino went on to complain that two people were arrested but warned that the 7 marches would be turned into 7 Mondays, with the next one due to be on Monday, 14 August 2017 at 9:30am.

Second sex harassment case in Samana
Another prosecutor accused of sexual harassment in Samana
After Robert Francis Justo Bobadilla, was removed from the position of prosecutor general in Samaná for sexual harassment, husband and wife Noe Francisco Cortorreal and Denisse Henriquez Vanderhorts have come forward in Samana to claim another case of sexual harassment. The couple said they were inspired by the removal of Samana chief prosecutor by the Inspectoría de la Procuraduría General de la República on 1 August 2017. Seven women, including four employees, accused him of sexual harassment, in that case were defended pro-bono by lawyer Luz Diaz.

The Cortorreal-Henríquez couple deposited a claim at the Inspectoría de la Procuraduría General de la República against Isidro Poché López, adjunct prosecutor accusing him of sexual harassment and extortion. They say that Poché López on the telephone and in person had extorted them alledgedly for RD$500,000-RD$1 million. The couple’s lawyer, Caonabo Martínez said Isidro Poché López was in charge of investigating a case in which Cortorreal was involved and had offered to file the case if Henríquez had sex with him.

Felix Sanchez opens athletics academy in the DR
Double Olympic gold medalist in the 400m hurdles (Athens 2004 and London 2012), Felix Sánchez (Super Sánchez), has opened his Sports Academy to raise the level of athletics in the Dominican Republic. The academy is operating from the Felix Sanchez Olympic Stadium in the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center. The track recently was renovated.

Sanchez was born in New York to Dominican parents. He retired from the sport in 2016 after a 20-year sports career. He lived and trained mostly in San Diego, California but took the Dominican sports nationality to compete in the Athens and London Olympics for the Dominican Republic.

In an interview in El Dia, Sánchez explained that whenever he visited the country for vacations he observed the enormous local talent and decided to use his fame to make a difference now that he has retired. He said the goal is to raise the level of Dominican track and field competitors to at least that of the best in the Caribbean – Jamaica, Cuba, Bahamas and Trinidad & Tobago.

He observed the reduced number of elite athletes now competing for the DR – the brothers Luguelin and Juander Santos, Yankarlos Martinez and Mayobanex de Oleo – compared to the hundreds in other Caribbean islands.

He will be assisted by Cuban trainer Emilio Valles at the new academy.
