    Default Cell Phone From US

Any advice here. Recently got a new S8. Do I keep number here and use Google Voice or similar?

Can I use the phone in the DR? Di I have to visit an ATT store there and register it into te DR network?

    Thanks!

If it's locked to AT&T, you can't use it with a Dominican SIM card. If it's unlocked, no problem.

If you purchased the phone outright, AT&T will unlock it for you, and you can use any sim card if you wish. If you are still making payments on it, you will need to use Google voice, messenger, or Whatsapp for calls.

I heard that Samsung S8 do not work very well with Claro Network here, that's why they didnt offer the device yet. VIVA said they will offer the new S8 and their test in their new Network they are using Samsung S8 phones.

Network infrastructure is still a problem here in the DR. Orange cannot offer 4G in the Puerto Plata/Sosua/Cabarete. 3G in my backyard is hit & miss. I'm usually relegated to 2G and Edge for data. Claro works better here but at my old house 15 minutes down the road, Claro was abysmal and Orange the only decent alternative. Internet infrastructure is pretty much the same.

Patchwork networks, offering good service in some places and poor service in other parts of the country limit the whole system. Orange sells the S8 here in Sosua, but there is absolutely no reason to buy one, because the available network doesn't support it.

Securing a post pay contract with Claro is akin to selling your soul to the devil where actually selling your soul to the devil is probably easier.

The conversion to fiber internet service is another example. Rather than upgrading blocks of the country one after the other, a community here and a community there hopscotching over everyone in between seems to be the norm.

For the time being, unless you are sure that where you live, a particular carrier offers the network backbone that your $800 phone needs, a $100 unlocked cheapie phone should do quite nicely for most people.

You should try to Get a prepaid simcard from VIVA, Their network has improve a lot, while I was using Claro inside my house I never got a call or could text in whatsapp with 2 points of Signal, Im using VIVA 3G and I can make and receive calls with only 1 point signal and can text on whatsapp. Im very happy now with the new Network they are installing, I have postpay service and can cancell anytime I want. The internet speed is very good, waitting end of the month when its going to be in service LTE for customers, and as they said their tested the network with S8. Check the video starting on minute 2:37 they will make 2 test with the Samsung S8 using the LTE from VIVA. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0uH...ature=youtu.be. the second test got 50 mbps. Lets see when they finish at the end of August and launch the service.

Thanks for great responses. My s8 is AT&T. If I unlock the phone and install an Orange or Claro or Viva sim card, will it work?
