Operative on Saona Island, seize 19 people and dismantle shacks

Florentino Durán
The Roman

At least 19 people were caught in a reorganization and inter-institutional reorganization operation carried out on Saona Island.

Among the detainees, 17 citizens are undocumented Haitians, a Venezuelan and an Italian. In the operation were eliminated two hatcheries of roosters and two pens.

Among those arrested were undocumented immigrants and people in conflict with the law, who used the island as makeshift shelters.

Since last March it had been notified that the clearing of hovels erected illegally would be carried out.

The meeting was attended by Alberto Pujols, director of Environment La Romana; Pablo Javier Santana, national administrator Cotubanamá; Colonel Wilfry Méndez, Director of Migration of La Romana; Captain Luis Alberto González, Commander Eastern Zone of the Dominican Navy; Major Montero of the Specialized Tourist Security Corps (Cestur), Bayahíbe; General Pacheco Garabito, East Regional Director of the National Police and Richard Güilamo, Environment Attorney.

In this work participated more than 30 agents of the different institutions, and began a process of cleaning throughout the island starting with the town of Mano Juan. Removal of engines in protected areas was also carried out as established by the Sectoral Law on Protected Areas, No. 202-04.

The operation is part of a program that seeks the settlement of the island, in order to optimize this protected area and strengthen sustainable tourism in it.
